Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is the official month for motorcycle safety awareness and couldn't come at a better time. With the weather warming up for the summer we are likely to see a large increase in motorcycle riders out on the streets especially here in the U.S.

It is already well known that riding a motorcycle can be very dangerous so extra care should always be taken while driving one. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (supporters of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month) show that people who ride motorcycles are 5 times more likely to be injured and 25 times more likely die in an accident as opposed to normal vehicles. While these stats may be frightening, it should not steer people away from riding if they are interested. By learning the rules and using safe practices, you can significantly increase your chances of staying out of those nasty statistics.

The most important thing to remember is that just like driving a car, safety on a motorcycle depends on you as well as others on the road. While it extremely important for the rider to follow the rules of the road and maintain safe driving practices, it is also important for other drivers on the road to pay attention for bikes as well.

Riders can learn lots of useful riding techniques and safety practices by taking safety courses and lessons. While this probably doesn't sound like the coolest or most fun thing to do, these lessons aren't usually longer than a couple hours and can provide some seriously beneficial information.

Riders should also wear proper gear and DOT approved helmets. By using good practices such as staying within your riding limits and performing simple tasks like using your turn signal you can improve your chances on the street.

The most important thing a motorcyclist can do is be a highly defensive driver. Be cautious when passing cars or changing lanes and always stay out of blind spots. You never know when someone will pull right into you so always watch out for those not paying attention.

Most of these rules apply to regular drivers out there in their cars and trucks with the exception that they need to have an even higher awareness of their surroundings. Motorcycle riders are much harder to see and are more susceptible to road hazards so it is important that other vehicles keep a sharp eye out for them. Always use turn signals and check your blind spots!

According to an article I read earlier, there were 170 motorcycle deaths last year in one state alone. This is why with the increase in riders it is more important than ever to watch out for each other on the streets and treat everyone on the road with equal respect.

If you are hitting the road this summer be careful and enjoy your ride!

Defensive driving on a bike is really the key along with all the safety equipment...I know they make a big deal out of wearing the helmets...not sure if it is mandatory in all states now but is in Louisiana....should be everywhere I think...I truly believe a helmet save me from more serious injury in the one bike wreck I had years ago...go article and advice

I completely agree. I know that here in Arkansas helmets are mandatory until you are 21 but I think you should wear one no matter how old/young you are.

Yes a well known fact you are more in danger on a bike than car. However I wish bikers would realise that they are not that visible when ripping along at twice the speed of a car and dodging in and out of traffic. If they would only keep head lights on or something, they are not that visible in a cars rear view mirror to a driver concentrating on heavy traffic in front of him. Just a point I wanted to make. Ride carefully we don't want to loose you.

Definitely. Riders are simply harder to see than big cars and it doesn't help when they zip in and out of traffic. That's why all drivers/riders on the road must be cautious of each other so we don't lose anyone!
