Types Of Motorcycles

When it comes to motorcycles there are definitely a wide variety of them out there. Everyone person has their own image when someone says the word motorcycle. One person may envision a lightning fast racing super bike while another may picture a more relaxed cruiser. So what's the difference? Below I have outlined some of the basic types of motorcycles and how you can tell which is which.

First of all, by basic definition a motorcycle is simply an engine driven vehicle that operates on two wheels. That's right, anything from a moped to a custom made chopper can be considered a motorcycle (don't tell that to the enthusiasts though!). So let's get started:

Sport bikes

These motorcycles can range in degree from flashy bikes that are driven around for fun, to all out racing bikes. Typically aimed toward race enthusiasts and the younger crowd, street bikes are usually defined by their sharp/sleek exterior, and fast powerful engines.

Sport Touring

These bikes are still sporty but their overall design and layout allows for a more comfortable ride. A more traditional sport/racing bike will be more aerodynamic and leaned forward. When traveling long distances this can become quite uncomfortable. A sport touring remedies this by having a more upright seat so the rider isn't hunched over. This type of motorcycle is for those who want a more relaxed ride but still have a "cool" looking bike.

Cruisers

Cruisers are even more relaxed than sport touring and come sometimes get into the "total comfort" range. These motorcycles are meant for long trips (cross country, etc.) and provide all the amenities for a comfortable ride. Many times these bikes are defined by laid back seats with back rests, A/C, radio, and lots of leg room. These are big bikes though and not meant for racing around corners by any means.

Mopeds/Scooters

The moped/scooter is a very basic type of motorcycle but used heavily throughout the world. These bikes get great gas mileage, have a small footprint, and are relatively easier to ride. While not the most powerful bike around, they do provide transportation for cheap and can be a good option for those learning how to handle a two wheeled vehicle.

Those are just a few of the most common motorcycles seen touring the streets. If broken down further we could get into all sorts of types including motocross, street bikes, super bikes, luxury motorcycles, choppers, the list goes on and on. If trying to learn how to ride any of these bikes it is important to know what type of motorcycle is for you so I always recommend researching further into what each bike represents and if it is a good match. As always when riding, no matter what bike you choose stay safe and enjoy the ride!

Street Talk

Great article, I would love to own one. At one of our coastal towns Margate they have the annual Harley bikes, this attracts thousands of bikers from all over the world, it gives us "bushies" the chance to see your custom bike builders as they come out and show here. What I love is to see 10000 odd bikers together all discussing the differences between the different bikes and the good and bad of others. But what I love the most is some of the most amazing looking, well manufactured, female riders I'd sit behind them anytime. LOL
