Vance And Hines Exhausts

Of all the upgrades you can find for your motorcycle, few will surpass a good set of exhausts. Whether it is for esthetic reasons or performance, your exhausts can radically change the character of your mount.

For me, my newly purchased 2007 Sportster was in mint shape except for the exhausts which were scratched up from the last owner riding two-up with no rear pegs. During 46 years of riding, I have always had stock exhausts although I preferred the look of some of the upgrades available. I held the opinion that stock exhausts would be superior in quality and performance. Now, after installing my Vance and Hines exhausts, I can say that they truly are an upgrade and not a simple replacement.

After reading reviews and checking what is available, I settled on Vance and Hines Staggered Short Shots. I always loved the look of Short Shots and, after research; I also decided to add the Vance and Hines Fuelpak and a Harley Screaming Eagle Stage One air filter. It proved to be a good decision. While the Short Shots performance pipes look much better than the stock pipes, they do change the air-fuel requirements for your engine. You will see on the box the exhausts come in “Stop. You need the Vance and Hines Fuelpak for these exhausts”. I highly suggest you get the Vance and Hines Fuelpak. You won’t be sorry.

While the air-fuel mixture will be adjusted automatically by the Fuelpak, your engine will want to breathe deeper so it is a good idea to have a high performance air filter. Your choice whether you go with something like an Arlen-Ness or Harley Stage One. Without the extra breathing, you simply won’t get the performance increase.

You will find the power increase around 10 percent which, when combined with the automatic 15 percent increase in horsepower you get from the normal fuel injection, means you now have a engine at least 25 percent stronger than a normally aspirated model. That is a lot of top end and torque.

With these three improvements you will have a totally different motorcycle and with some installation tips, all the upgrades can be done in an afternoon. Instead of the dull putt-putt of the stock noise-reduction pipes, you now will have a healthy rumble and the power increase is substantial at any speed. Twist the throttle even at low revs and you will feel a vastly stronger engine. The sweet music from your pipes will block most annoying engine noises. It really is your biggest bang for your buck and there are a wide variety of models and styles to choose from. The only downside I have found with the upgrade is slightly increased fuel consumption which is a good trade off for improved performance and ride ability.

One last suggestion for this upgrade is to get the “Quiet Baffles.” The stock baffles that come with the Short Shots are VERY LOUD. I can guarantee that you will want to change the deafening stock baffles. I recommend you order the Quiet Baffles at the same time so that you can install them before you install your new exhausts. If you decide to install the Quiet Baffles after you have already installed the Short Shots, you will have to remove both exhausts. Save yourself a lot of work by installing the Quiet Baffles first. With the Quiet Baffles, you will find your pipes plenty loud and plus have a nicer tone.

See you on the highway!
