What Sportbike is Right for Me?

In a previous article I talked about the many different types of motorcycles that are out there. One of the styles that I touched on (and often display) is sport bikes. If you are an aspiring rider and have decided that you want to go the sportbike route you are probably wondering which one you should get or which is the best sportbike to purchase.

Well obviously this is going to depend on a lot of factors including budget, riding skill, commitment, etc. However, even if you are a brand new rider on a small budget you can still put in the research to get the best sportbike for YOU. That's the key here, there is no such thing as the best sportbike because of the simple fact that each person's tastes differ. Coming from a technical standpoint, yes, there is a possibility that one motorcycle is much better than an older, less quality build model but who knows, that older bike may be preferred to some.

Case in point was my first motorcycle purchase. I had been searching for months for the "perfect" bike but everything seemed either too outdated or too expensive. I eventually ran across a gently used Suzuki Katana 600 for the price that I was looking for. Was it the most stylish of sportbikes? No. The fastest? Not even close. So why would I end up spending my hard earned money on something that wasn't the "best"? Well for one it was my first motorcycle so any purchase is going to be a learning experience but more importantly because it fit the description of what I was looking for. I wanted a decent sporty bike that I could still learn on and have fun with. This particular bike was less race inspired than say a GSXR1000 so it was easier to sit on and handle as well as the fact that it had much lower torque and power allowing for a better transition phase into riding. Turns out that the bike was exactly what I wanted/needed at the time. It allowed me to appreciate motorcycles, learn to ride them better, and understand what I would want to purchase in the future.

From then on I was able to test out plenty of other bikes and really get a feel for what I like regarding sizes, weight, power, and overall style. In fact, my tastes have evolved and changed so much since my first bike that there are motorcycles out there now that I would love to own that before I would have never even DREAMED of touching!

If you are into extremely stylish and fast machines then you will probably stick closer to race inspired bikes like the GSXR or YZF-R1. Want to ride a sportbike but you don't like all of the flair? You will probably be more partial to a naked bike like the Ducati Streetfighter. In the end it really is up to what fits you the best.

The key when looking to purchase the best sportbike it is always important to keep in mind that the best sportbike to someone else may not necessarily be the best sportbike for you.

The Ducati is my favoured bike, the roar of that engine sends shivers down my spine. I wish I was young again.

I 100% agree. I don't think there is a greater bike (in my opinion) out there than the Ducati. You can still ride I'm sure, just don't tell the wife!
