Fathers Day Movie Marathon Ideas: 10 Best Action Movies Of All Time

There is nothing like a good adrenaline pumping, fast paced action movie to keep you entertained. Bullets, explosions and the thrills of rooting for the hero (or the bad guy) are just some of the things we look for in this exciting movie genre.

In this article, I present to you some of my favorite action movies that I've seen. These would be great for a Father's Day movie marathon if your old man likes movies.

They may not be your favorites or you might have seen a few of them before or even the entire list. Hopefully, you'll agree that the action movies on this list are worthy of being on a list of 10 best action movies of all time.

10. Bad Boys (1995)

Will Smith stars in this Michael Bay directed action-comedy about two police detectives that try to protect the witness to a murder that might be connected to a drug heist.

Every time this movie comes on, I get caught up watching it because the scenes just progress nicely and Tcheky Karyo is one bad mutha of a bad guy.

I didn't care much for the sequel although it was a bit entertaining.

9. The Rock (1996)

The Rock is another Michael Bay directed action movie. This guy really knows how to do action films and The Rock is another of my favorites.

Nicholas Cage finds an unlikely sidekick in Sean Connery when a group of mercenaries take over The Alcatraz prison and plans to unleach biological weapons on San Francisco Bay.

I really enjoyed Sean Connery in this movie as he kicks butt and even does a James Bond style escape from a rooftop before hijacking a Hummer and causing havoc on the streets of San Francisco with Cage in full tow.

Look for Ed Harris as the bad guy leader of the mercenary group.

8. Desperado (1995)

You can probably call this movie a modern western. There aren't any horses or cattle rustling but there are some crazy gunfight scenes.

Banderas plays 'El Mariachi' and has somewhat of a mysterious stranger persona as he 'rides' into town looking for a local drug dealer.

You'll love this movie if only for the gunfights which are numerous but not senseless like most other movies. Guns in guitar cases? Who wouldn't want to see that?

7. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

This movie came out the year I was born, in 1981 and directed by Steven Spielberg.

It's the kind of action adventure you just don't want to miss any of so you'll need to have that six pack of beer in a cooler while watching or someone to go get it for you.

Indiana Jones is on a race to find the Ark of the Covenant (the one from the Bible) before it gets into the hands of the Nazis.

I love this film because it takes Indiana Jones all over the world so the settings change and you get different types of action scenes throughout the entire movie.

6. True Lies (1994)

Two Schwarzenegger movies made this list. You can probably guess what the other one is. Arnold has so many good action films that keep you entertained.

True Lies has some intense if not unbelievable action scenes that they are sometimes comical. With all the usual one liner, Arnold fights terrorists as he tries to keep his secret identity as a spy from his wife (who gets caught up in the mix when she decides to have an affair).

This movie has everything you would expect from a movie with Schwarzeneggar in it - funny one liners, hilarious puns, guns, explosions and unbelievable stunts.

5. The Matrix (1999)

With it's innovative special effects and unique story, The Matrix was a hit back in 1999.

It follows a hacker names Neo who is recruited by an organization of rebel computer hackers to save humanity. Everything happens in an alternate reality where the mind can bend spoons and you can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

The visuals in this movie are really stunning and you will get hooked by the superhero storyline and stunts that follow. You'll love or hate all the characters which include Morpheus (Laurence Fishburn), Trinity (Carrie Ann Moss) and their main nemesis, Agent Smith.

There were also two sequels to this but I didn't like either although they had the same crazy visuals as you would expect.

4. Speed (1994)

Another action movie starring Keanu Reeves. I remember watching this at the movies back in '94 and really loving the concept of a speeding bus with a bomb on it. If the bus goes below 50 mph, it will blow up.

There are lots of twists and turns in this movie and it's fast pace which definitely fits the title will keep you glued to your seat.

Dennis Hopper plays the mad bomber guy and Sandra Bullock drives the bus. I could watch this movie every time it comes on.

If you enjoy this movie, you might be tempted to check out the sequel about a cruise ship that can't stop. Don't!

3. Die Hard (1988)

Die Hard was the start of a series of great action movies with John McClane (played by Bruce Willis). McClane fights terrorist who hold everyone hostage inside a Los Angeles high rise.

The action is very realistic and the one man army that is McClane suffers bruises and is bloody and battered by the time the ordeal is over.

You may also want to check out all the sequels especially Die Hard with a Vengeance - I really liked that one.

2. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

This is Arnold's second movie on the list and it's one of my favorite movies of all time and definitely one of the best action movies ever.

Arnold who played the bad terminator in the first Terminator film returns from the future as a good terminator who must save John Connor so he can become a future leader in the war against the machines.

Robert Patrick plays the bad terminator who comes back to kill John Connor. He's one of my favorite characters in the movie but you kinda want his indestructible self dead.

This is a much better film than the first one likely because it had a bigger budget and with advancements in technology with regards to movie making and special effects. It was also guaranteed to win because it already had a following and they made the story so much better with this one.

T3 wasn't all that good and I couldn't make it past 30 minutes without falling asleep while watching Salvation (which I already didn't care much about because it didn't have Arnold in it).

1. The Killer (1989)

My favorite movie of all time is also an action movie. It is also a foreign movie. It's 1989's the Killer and stars Chow Yun Fat (The Replacement Killers) and is directed by John Woo (who influenced many future Hollywood action movies with his trademark styles).

I watched this movie when I was just about 13 or 14 and I was stunned with how much action this movie had. The action scenes were greatly done too and I couldn't tell if Chow was the bad guy or the good guy.

To be honest he's somewhere in between. There is the cop who you might say is the extreme good guy here trying to catch Chow after he carried out an assassination. Then there are the bad guys who double crossed Chow and won't give him the money he needed to have an operation performed to restore the eyesight of a woman he accidentally blinded during a shootout.

There is also several running themes in this movie which makes it more than just pointless action. There is the theme of redemption, the theme of friendship (Chow's character's relationship with the guy who worked for the bad guy's who set up the deal) and other themes that aren't too hard to catch.

This movie has everything from shootouts to Mexican standoffs, double crossing to John Woo's trademarks like doves flying before the action pops off.

People have debated between The Killer and Hardboiled (Chow Yun Fat and John Woo again) as to which one is better, or has the most action or the bigger body count but The Killer is definitely much better in my book.

Well, those are my top 10 best action movies of all time. See the ones you haven't seen or rent them all for a Father's Day movie marathon.

Thanks, I'll check some of these out. May I suggest "Cliffhanger" (with Stallone) and "Point Break" (K.Reeves) non-stop action movies and available on Youtube still.

Great choice. Never seen The Killer but all the others would fit in my list of 10 best action movies. Bit older than you so Guns of Navarone and Zulu might have to be squeezed in but as you said to someone else 10 it is and 10 it has to stay. :-)

Thanks. I had considered Predator for inclusion in this list but I can only have 10 so I went with the ones I've seen multiple times.

Ye, it really is impossible to pick from the huge list and the great thing here is, I haven't seen The Killer, so your list has provided me with a task to do.
