Field Of Dreams In Iowa Trivia 101

When it comes to the movie Field of Dreams, most fans know Kevin Costner was the star. They know James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster played marvelous supporting roles. They know you can find the Field of Dreams in Iowa. They know the Field of Dream movie was about baseball. *buzzer* OK, Field of Dreams was much more than a baseball movie. Father and son relationships, love, redemption and second chances aside, most ardent fans know little about the bumper crop (no pun intended) of trivial facts generated by the making of the film.

*Canadian author W.P. Kinsella wrote a novel called 'Shoeless Joe', and the ensuing movie was was filmed under the title 'Shoeless Joe'. In fact, Dyersville, Iowa motorists who helped film the movie's spectacular closing scene were all given bumper stickers proclaiming their involvement in the movie 'Shoeless Joe'. Shortly before release, Universal Studios renamed the project 'Field of Dreams', eliciting a sharp objection from director Phil Alden Robinson. After learning Kinsella originally titled his book 'Dream Field', Robinson abandoned his protest.

*When Annie victoriously slides into the lockers after the PTA 'Nazi cow' meeting, actress Amy Madigan and Kevin Costner are actually exiting the women's restroom. There is no possible way to encounter lockers when exiting the school gymnasium in which the scene was filmed.

*The lead role of Ray Kinsella was originally offered to movie superstar Tom Hanks, but he passed on the role.

*The most famous line from the movie, "If you build it, he will come" was voted #39 on the American Film Institute's list of the most popular movie quotes of all-time. Any guesses what #40 was? "Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." Yep, Tom Hanks.

*The Iowa summer of 1988 was one of the driest on record. After movie producers channeled lots of extra water to the corn, the stalks grew quickly. So quickly, in fact, that in the opening scene, Kevin Costner was forced to walk amongst the corn rows on an elevated plank, nearly a foot off the ground.

*During a night-time practice, Shoeless Joe (played by Ray Liotta) makes a disparaging remark about Ty Cobb's desire to play on the field: "None of us could stand the S.O.B. when we were alive, so we told him to stick it!" In real life, Joe Jackson and Ty Cobb were very close friends, even though it didn't appear that way on the Field of Dreams in Iowa.

*Seven semi-truck loads of sod were laid during the construction of the baseball field. A hasty shooting schedule, however, gave the grass little chance to take root and blossom, and nearly all of it died. Production crews solved the problem by painting the grass green.

The grass may have died, but 24 years after the making of a legendary film outside the small farming community of Dyersville, the ballfield and the magic are alive and well at the Field of Dreams in Iowa.

Very interesting! I think the title change better suits the movie and probably added to its box office success. What do you think?
