Lights! Camera! - Are You Kidding?!

Have you ever read a most amazing book, savoring every word, knowing as soon as you finish you could easily go back to the beginning and start reading it all over again? When I came across Dean Koontz's book “Watchers”, that was the effect it had on me. I was about 15 or 16 when I first read that book, and to this day it remains my favorite book of all time.

So naturally, when I happened across the adapted movie one day while browsing through a video rental store (this was back when people actually had to go out and physically rent a movie – you know, the good ole days), I was thrilled and couldn't wait to watch the movie. But at the moment, I was still in the process of reading the book, so I forced myself to wait until I had finished the book before I rented the movie.

Anyone who has both read the book and watched the movie can surely predict what my reaction was. “Hollywood” had taken my beloved book, the one book by which I would compare all my future writing – and they butchered it nearly beyond recognition! A story that was perfect just the way it was. Now granted, for someone who hadn't read the book, they might find the movie to be of “decent” quality. I'm not knocking the production skills of the film makers or the talent of the actors. Cory Haim played the main character and was good at the role they gave him. They just completely ruined the story that was supposed to have originated from the book. A shame, too, because the story was so great.

I recall reading in a script writing book where it stated that the movie makers aren't obligated to keep with the story of the book they're adapting to film – which made absolutely no sense to me. People watch an adapted movie almost always because they enjoyed the book – and when they're robbed of the story, it is a serious let-down. And they will, in turn, discourage others from watching the film. My advice is...if you're going to watch a movie that has been adapted from a book – and you haven't read the book yet – watch the movie “first”. Because except with a few very rare cases, the movie is almost always a disappointment when compared to the book. Some film makers actually come through for both reader and movie goer. But as I said, it is very rare.

It is my humble opinion that the film makers who butchered the book “Watchers” owe Dean Koontz their deepest and most sincere apology.

Oh! And what about The Dark Knight and Spider-man and The Avengers, etc. Comic books count, too, right? Okay, I'm gonna shut up now :D

I agree that comic books count also :) Although I wasn't an avid reader of those specific comics. I do remember a phase when i read a lot of Hulk comics. I still love the Hulk, he's my favorite :) I read tons of the large Conan comics, I was constantly borrowing them from my brother who had a huge collection. I watched the new Conan movie and it was pretty good, but I grew up on the old movie with Schwarznegger (I don't know if I spelled that right - could've just said Arnold :) and I think I will always favor the old over the new. Some are just classics and shouldn't be messed with. Like trying to cast someone other than Robert Englund as Freddie Freuger - I mean, what the hell?? Literally lol. It just don't work. And just as Robert Englund will always be "Freddie", Arnold will always be "Conan". That's not to say I can't appreciate a remake. I was never a great fan of the old version of "The Shining" and prefer the remake - it went much closer with the book. Even Stephen King wasn't happy with the old version. Although Jack's "Here's Johnny!" will always be a classic line :) So that's my senseless garble for the night and I guess it's time for me to stop talking now :)

My first S.K. book was 'Salem's Lot and I don't think they've EVER made a film that's lived up to that book. And if they ever do, I don't think I'll watch it! The book was spooky enough, lol.

The Shawshank Redemption was one of the exceptions. It originated from a short story by Stephen King. Also Beouwolf(the computer animated film), but then again that was a poem, not a book, right? Looking forward to what they do with James Paterson's Maximum Ride and Stephen King's Dark Tower saga. OMG, and what about the Harry Potter movies?!? No, seriously, what about them? I've never read the books but the movies grew on me.

I never read the Harry Potter books either, but I did like the movies - or the ones I saw anyway. I think I only got to the 4th or 5th ones. Sometime I will finish watching them. Being a Stephen King fan, I'm ashamed to say I've never read the Dark Tower saga. I did like the movie of The Shawshank Redemption but I never read the short story.

Yeah, the short wasn't called The Shawshank Redemption, though. It was one story in a collection of shorts. Can't recall the name of the book, but I'll find out if you're interested.
