I love Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens on FX Networks hit show Justified. Olyphant has portrayed two great TV lawmen, Raylan Gives and Seth Bullock on HBO's Deadwood. He also had a recurring role on Damages plus several memorable guest starring roles in various shows. However, Olyphant has also had a rather diverse movie career. He has played everything from a gay man to a porn director. Here is my top five favorite movies that Mr. Olyphant has starred in.
1. Catch and Release - Although this movie had several things I did not like including the fact that co-star Kevin Smith's part was way too large. The Smith storyline totally took away from the crux of the movie which was the romance between Jennifer Garner's character and Olyphant's character. But putting that complaint aside I did love the chemistry between Garner and Olyphant. I enjoyed the handsome, charming Olyphant as the romantic lead. The main story follows Jennifer Garner as Gray whose fiancé has just died. Olyphant's character Fritz from California turns up at the funeral at first Gray dislikes Fritz but as the story progresses so does their relationship. Best scene in the movie is when Olyphant kisses her in the tool shed. Best face sucking kiss ever!
2. The Crazies - This movie was billed as a zombie movie but it actually is more of an Armageddon type movie. When the town's water supply is accidentally infected with a virus the government is experimenting with, it turns all the townsfolk in Ogden Marsh Iowa into depraved blood thirsty killers. Olyphant stars as David the local sheriff. His wife is played by Radha Mitchell the towns doctor. After Olyphant's character David is forced to shoot a local man at the baseball game things go downhill. The story is one of survival as Olyphant and Mitchell fight to survive both the virus and the government henchmen sent in to clean up the mess.
3. High Life - High Life is a Canadian film based on a stage play by Lee MacDougall. High Life is a dark comedy. It is set in 1983 around the time that ATM machines began to appear. Timothy Olyphant plays Dick an ex-con and a drug addict. When Dick meets up with a former cell mate Bug played by Stephen McIntyre they hatch a plan to rob one of the brand new ATM's. They recruit a crew of four friends to do the job. What ensues is one hilarious mishap after another. Both tragic and hysterical this movie is one of Olyphant's best performances in my opinion.
4. Go - Olyphant signed up to appear in the movie Go after he was dropped from the movie Practical Magic. That roll later went to Aidain Quinn. This was a stroke of luck for Olyphant as Go turned out to be his breakout performance. This critically acclaimed ensemble movie starred Katie Holmes and Jay Mohr, The story follows three people who work together in a supermarket over a twenty four hour period. Olyphant plays a drug dealer who is double crossed by Holmes and her two friends. Olyphant is at once menacing and charming.
5.Advice From a Caterpillar - This is a small independent movie from 1999. It stars Olyphant, Cynthia Nixon and Andy Dick. If you can get past imagining Olyphant and Andy Dick as a couple this movie is a charming little romance. Olyphant plays Brat a bi-sexual struggling actor in New York City. Although he is in a relationship with Andy Dick's character, he falls for Dick's friend Cynthia Nixon. Nixon is involved with a married man and is a commitment shy career woman. They journey to love is a strange but endearing tale.
Although I have enjoyed Timothy Olyphant in other movies such as Scream 2, Hitman and A Perfect Getaway these are my five favorites. If you have a favorite please leave a comment and tell me what they are.
