While many television viewers are dealing with the lost of fan favorites FOX plans to revamp it s lineup in an attempt to keep their music television shows in the spotlight. Quite a few new series and a few old shows got the axe as major TV networks rolled out their fall lineups at up-fronts last week. Though FOX experienced a lower viewership with their major musical staples, they are betting that a reshuffling of programming and some surprises will be enough for American Idol, The X Factor and Glee.
Sunday night marked the end of an era with the series finale of Desperate Housewives. The comedic drama ran successfully for 8 years in a Sunday night prime time slot. Viewers took some comfort in ABC newcomer GCB which used the familiar blend of comedy and drama with a splash of music. The hopes of GCB filling the void left by Desperate Housewives have unofficially been dashed with rumors of the show s cancellation. GCB had become a guilty pleasure of mine especially since I still have not recovered from the loss of All My Children. The new series had company on the chopping block as ABC canceled Missing, Pan Am and The River as well.
NBC said goodbye to the unlikely group of spies and oddballs at the fictional Buy More from the series Chuck. Though I was sad to see the show end the timing was right. Harry's Law on the other hand was just getting warmed up and probably had a few more seasons left before it became stale. Oddly enough the reason for the cancellation was not low ratings but old ratings.
Yep that's right, a good show was canned because the demographic was deemed to old. I'm a little offended as I'm no spring chicken but nowhere near menopausal yet. Maybe TBS will swoop in and save the day like they did for ABC show Cougar Town starring Courtney Cox. Harry's Law embodies the vibe of it s David E. Kelly created predecessors The Practice and Boston Legal and stars pistol Kathy Bates. Additionally NBC cancelled The Sing-Off, Awake, Are You There, Chelsea?, Bent, Best Friends Forever, Free Agents, The Firm, The Playboy Club and Prime Suspects.
FOX gave several shows pink slips including Alcatraz, The Finder and two shows that grew on me, Breaking In and I Hate My Teenage Daughter. Drops in ratings did not stop the network from renewing music based shows The X Factor, American Idol and Glee. I personally lost interest in American Idol when they changed judges and got over Glee in the beginning of the second season when I noticed a major drop in actual dialogue to fit in a slew of songs that came off as a thinly veiled marketing/PR push. Fox hopes that new judges for The X Factor, some surprises for American Idol and a program schedule change for Glee will help the shows' ratings rebound next season. Will you be watching?
Hated Alcatraz being cancelled. I really got into that show for some reason. I thought it had potential because it had staying power, story wise. They had like 200 more inmates and guards to go...that's 200 more episodes lol. They just had to make sure that it didn't get boring and redundant and apparently they didn't. Good read.
