The Walking Dead Season Finale

The second season finale of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” aired Sunday night, and what a thrill it was! I believe we are soon to be entering a new era of zombie movies. They are fascinating, have heart-stopping suspense, and people just seem drawn to them.

“The Walking Dead” series on AMC has good actors and the special effects are the best. The reason I expect to see more zombie movies is because a highly successful movie or series usually spawns more of its kind. Just think of “Forrest Gump,” or “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” These two movies caused a flurry of similar films to be made. (These spin-off types of movies are usually not that good.)

But I think the zombie genre has a lot of potential. Especially if the writers do a good job. Of course, when it comes to competition, AMC doesn’t have anything to worry about yet.

That might change after the third season next fall, however. It seems that when some shows are extremely popular starting out they have trouble keeping their high ratings after the second season. This would give the competition a chance. Maybe sometimes this is because of changes in the story that viewers were not happy with. Management decisions can also ruin a show.

A screenwriting teacher once told me that writers are often replaced on a TV show. This might be done for financial reasons or because of a dispute. Writers are plentiful in Hollywood and it is easy to see how it could happen. Many times this is a mistake. Even though the new writing team may have qualifications just as good as the previous team, they are still different people. In a nutshell, this could kill the magic.

The “Walking Dead” series on AMC reminds me of other highly dramatic shows on prime time TV. The unique difference is the setting. The characters are living in a reality where there has been a zombie apocalypse. From where they are, outside of Atlanta, it appears that most of the world’s population has been killed.

The word “zombie” is not used by the characters on the show in the “Walking Dead” series. They are referred to as “walkers” by the group of survivors. This is a good thing because it removes any “kid stuff” from the show. “Walking Dead” is definitely not a kid show and I think the “zombie” word belongs on those older movies that were made for kids and teenagers.

So, time will tell if the “Walking Dead” series is going to last. The cop shows that have been so popular for the last few years are starting to age a little. It’s time for something refreshing.
