10. Wall Street II: Money Never Sleeps
The second of the Wall Street Saga (I'm sure of it! haha, they'll probably make a third one with Charlie Sheen if his new show doesn't pan out!), Gordan Gecko is released from jail and hasn't had any contact with his family for years. An up and coming stock broker, Jake Moore approches Gecko at a seminar about business and tells him, he's about to marry his daughter. Just like the first movie, Gecko has something up his sleeve, but of course, we don't get to see what it is right away. This movie superbly explains the 2008 stock market crash and we really do learn a good bit about business from this 2010 Oliver Stone film.
9. Informant!
SPOILER ALERT. I only saw this once, so please bear with me if I'm still confused. Matt Damon plays Mark Whitacre, who with all the self narration he does, is played to the audience as a lunatic. He is the main witness to an illegal price fixing gambit at a agri-business company, only his part in the investigation is confusing because the cops can't see what at all he could be getting out of it...that is until the end of the movie. We learn the ins and outs of the background business world of lying and cheating, like all the other business movies on this list. It's funny as hell as much as it is confusing and baffling that this kind of thing really occurred. If you really want to be sick, just read the after story of what happend to Whitacre, written before the credits come up.
8. Back to School
Even though it's about going "back to school," Rodney Dangerfield's character, Thorton Melon gives us, students a great lesson on turning our school work into a business. Being a businessman from the time he was a teenager, Melon had to think quickly on his feet if he was going to be the owner and operator of the large chain of Tall and Fat stores across the country. After he leaves his cheating wife and his big mansion in the country, he decides to spend more time with his son, and joins him at his college where he enrolls as a very old student. He hires Kurt Vonagant to write his english paper on...Kurt Vonagant and gets his science home work done by NASA. If this isn't the very best education on delegation, I don't know what is.
7. Trading Places
Another stock broker movie that shows that anyone in a capitalistic society can win or lose no matter their current social status or ethnic background. Billy Ray Valentine is a homeless beggar that tricks people into giving him change by pretending to be a blind paraplegic. Louis Winthorpe III is a mega-wealthy stock broker working for the most successful trading firm in NYC. What do they have in common? On a bet for a dollar, they are both about to be given each other's lives to see if Valentine & Winthorpe will adapt to their new predicaments and take on the new changes quickly or if they are who they are and quickly go back to their rich and poor selves. We actually learn a few things about the stock market, and trading in this glorious comedy about business.
6. The Social Network
We see first hand how a company is created, why certain people are put in charge, how others rise to the top and most dramatically in this film, that some of the most important people are left out and why. The Social Network, that should have won the Academy Award for best picture of 2010 shows not so much about why facebook is so great, but how a Billion Dollar business can be created practically over night, with just some luck and persistance....oh and lying and cheating of course, doesn't everyone know that's how it works!
