10. Rockstar
The old classic rock bands that are still performing are starting to do what the band in this movie does, replace an old fading musician with a young talented duplicate. Mark Wahlberg plays a twenty something with a hottie girlfriend and a healthy obsession with his all time favorite band, Steel dragon. He's such a die hard fan, he even poses as the lead singer in a coverband. He sends in his demo to the real Stel Dragon band, and gets a call from the lead guitar player who is looking to replace the longtime lead singer who has had trouble with the band for a long time now. Apon meeting his idol, he learns that he is actually gay and the nipple rings that he himself had pierced was for his homoerotic pleasure. His dreams are dashed one by one as he takes on the role that he had wanted his whole life.
9. School of Rock
Jack Black plays Dewey Finn who looking for work pretends to be a substitute teacher and teaches Rock n Roll and Rock n Roll History to a bunch of prep school musicians. For a good solid education in Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, this is a good place to start.
8. This is Spinal Tap
Christopher Guest's first big fake documentary is about the loudest band in Rock and Roll history. We might have to thank Guest for reality television and the personality disorders they create. I do believe that for many years after 1984, people really wondered whatever happened to the very famous 80s Hair Band, "Spinal Tap." The most interesting and fun part about this trend setter is that the three main actors, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer and Christopher Guest are all listed as the writers, because they improvise pretty much the whole movie, just awesome. Christompher Guest is also in one of my top 100 favorites of all time, the Princess Bride, which is the longer version of my top ten.
7. Labamba
Labamba tells the true and sad rags to riches story of latin legend, Ritchie Valens. He was born in Los Angeles to a dirt poor Mexican-American family, who brought him up loving and playing music. His parents and family all played an instrument and he never put them down. When he finally became recognized for his talents, only 8 months went by before "The Day the Music Died." Valens, Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash in Greenbay Wisconsin. The movie accurately and warmly portrays Valens as the kind hearted and joyful artist he was.
6. Walk the Line
Walk the Line is the true tale of Johnny Cash's smoky romance with country star June Carter. This Rock and Roll Icon was an Elvis on the wrong side of the tracks. His voice was low, his scars were deep and his heart was in there somewhere, even if he kept it hidden very well. Personally, I thought he did a great job, but I thought Joaquin Phoenix was a strange casting choice for someone has hard and brittle as the man in black. Reese Witherspoon was most certainly a dead on match for June Carter who played her sassy with style.
