This list is labeled in the order of how imaginative and creative the time traveling is, not how good the overall movie is.
10. Hot Tub Time Machine
Each Time Travel movie has some sort of instrument they use to travel into the past or the future; instead of Doc Brown, Chevy Chase the plumber seems to be the mad scientist that ends up accidentally sending them back to the 1980s in a hot tub. After a middle aged man attempts suicide, his two best friends and one of their nephews journeys up to a ski lodge they use to vacation to when they were teenagers. When they get there, the place is not what they remembered, and they all get very depressed, wishing their lives were somehow different. In 2010 they call some hookers, open some alcohol and dive into their golden hot tub and wake up in 1986. They relive a weekend of memories, some were good ones and some were not so good ones, but they must do exactly what they did back in 86 or else they'll never get home. It's wacky and predictable but it's so outrageously funny, you'll stop arguing about what's realistic or not.
9. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
Bill and Ted are two 17 year old best friends. They are either very stupid or very high. They're history teacher tells them that if they don't get an A on their oral history exam, they'll flunk out of school and Ted's father will send him to Military school. This is one of my favorites, even though it's stupid as hell. For no reason (and that's why it's up at #9) a phone booth appears out of the sky and George Carlin tells them they are to go back in time and collect some help on their history exam. On their journey through the past they kidnap Napoleon, Billy the Kid, Socrates, Abraham Lincoln, Beethoven, Genghis Khan and Joan of Arc. This example of time travel, has the theory that it is a cycle that repeats over and over in which there is no beginning or end. This is how Bill and Ted are able to meet themselves without any Doc Brown Paradoxes happening and how a garbage can, can appear out of nowhere on a cops head just because Ted says, I gotta remember a garbage can later on. These theories are hilarious, and I wish I could hitch a telephone booth and go back to 1970 and kidnap Jim Morrison.
8. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
My favorite of the Harry Potter movies simply for this reason! Tightly based off of the book, the Prisoner of Azkaban is the only Harry Potter book to have time travel. Harry's friend Hermione uses a time turner which is a small metal pendent that she wears around her neck to go back mere hours into the past to take more school classes and get her grades up to near record breakers. Towards the end of this story, Harry and Hermione find themselves needing to save an innocent man from having his soul sucked out of his body, so the Hogwarts headmaster, Dumbledore advises them to go back three hours into the past, steal a condemned magical bird creature called a hippogriff, and fly the prisoner of Azkaban to safety. This method of time travel theory is the same as Bill and Ted because again they can see themselves, and their future selves already existed in the past, which is shown when before they even went back in time, future Harry saves past Harry from the dementors. Again I say this is a paradox because, future Harry says that the only reason he was able to save himself is because he knew that he already did it. This is a paradox because at one time at the beginning of the cycle if that is possible, there WAS no future harry.
7. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
The second of the series is even more surreal and awesome. The time travel is explained in the first one, but in this one, it raises some questions for me. The robot in the first one is the same model as the now good version in this one, why does the the T 1000 seem like its a century more technologically advanced? If it truly is the past and the future, couldn't the T-1000 be sent back to the same 1984 time as in the first one, or even further in the past? Why send it back to a time when the mother has already told the son what the deal is? The movie is fun as hell to watch but I find the theory to be pretty faulty.
6. Time After Time
This 1979 horror film is set in present day, when an inventor in the past time travels to our present to catch a murderer from his time. This theory is similar to that of "the time machine" in which you can go into the future without disrupting the past because it hasn't happend yet and won't because it was a one time occurrence. The movie should be watched more for the psychological thrilling aspect than the time travel. Jack the ripper finally feels at home in a time when murder and violence run rampant and his horrific acts are seen as just a little out of the ordinary.
