Watch Australian TV Overseas

Hulu might be slowly taking over the world of streaming TV online, and as far as American TV programming goes, still "takes the cake", for Australians, there are still a number of Australian TV streaming sites that they prefer. Plus 7, ABC iView, Ten, and SBS on demand provide a variety of free and membership oriented TV streaming services available ONLY in Australia. If you're a member of one of these sites, or prefer the types of shows one or more of them offer, streaming television outside of Australia presents a number of problems. Trying to watch Australian TV overseas in a country/language you're not familiar with is difficult, if not impossible. Trying to access Australian TV streaming sites without an Australian IP is also impossible. It is possible, however, to get access to your favorite Australian TV sites, no matter where you are.

Virtual private networks have a number of uses related to IP addresses. The IP address of your computer or phone is like your home address. It says a lot about where you are, specs of your system, and can even provide a path to finding out browsing/downloading history as well as other personal data, passwords, and login credentials. VPNs are on the frontline for protecting against identity theft and online privacy protection. That's another story, but it relates to our because VPNs help you change your IP address.

When you try to access Australian TV streaming sites like Plus 7, ABC, and Ten while you're outside Australia, it's your IP address that gives away your location and gets you blocked. Pretty much every country has the same rules. Hulu blocks users outside The US, BBC iPlayer blocks users outside The UK. It's all tied into distribution rights and copyright protection, but we don't' need to worry about the WHY. The main this is the HOW - through your IP address.

VPNs are designed to change your IP address, and even hide the fact that you're using a VPN to change your IP. For any site or individual who does put your IP under a microscope will only see an authentic local IP. Data encryption and tunneling ensures this.

To get an Australian IP address, you only need to make sure that the VPN service you sign up for have VPN services in Australia. An Australian IP isn't quite a popular as US or UK IP addresses, so not all services offer this location. However, there are a few - you've just got to look around. VPNs can be installed on your smart phone as well as computer, and the Australian IP provided by the VPN service won't just allow you to watch Australian TV overseas. Any local Australian site that requires an Aussie IP - even movie streaming sites like Big Pond Movies or local banks/businesses can be accessed.

Street Talk

Hi Rodders Sorry, to tell you this but "Mitchel Stanvich" has reproduced your work and posted in his name on a google blogsite. I can not give you the url here but if you put the title of your article "Watch Australian TV Overseas" into google and search you will find it and see the problem. I am also an author on streetarticles and Mitchel had stolen my work too. After a bit of digging I discovered another streetarticles author with the same problem. They have been notified. I have reported the matter to google and within 24 hours they have removed my article from Mitchel's account. However, we all need to do it individually. Maybe if enough of us do it they will close his account and his google+ account completely. Regards Rob Jones

Thank you for warning me of this situation. I've been in these situations before, and typically, nothing gets done so I'm surprised Google was able to respond so quickly. I will look into this, to see if we can fix this together. Are you on WA as well? BTW, I'm replying as "Roderick", but it's just a different account here at SA.
