What is A Good Film?

Or to put it another way; how long is a piece of string? (Answer below)

When I was in the UK, I used to rely on the BBC Radio Times for my T.V. viewing guide (I rarely watched commercial channels; there’s no greater insult to one’s intelligence than to be thrust into a supermarket when engrossed in a good film) not that I was an avid TV viewer anyway but I liked the odd documentary or good film which brings me nicely to the subject of this article, doesn’t it.

The first page I generally went to was the film reviews for the week. In the old days this was presented by one person, Barry Norman for example, who also had a TV program of up and coming films. I used Mr. Norman as a sort of yardstick and although I didn’t always agree with his opinions as to what made a good film, I’d become accustomed to his particular tastes.

They used a star-rating system, as is common today, and this provided a good visual reference. Having said that, I would sometimes enjoy a badly rated film and conversely get totally bored by a five star rated effort; it’s all down to personal taste which is the essence of this article.

Then, lo and behold, one day I turned to the film reviews page for that week and discovered an anomaly: the film reviews were now being written by a team of some four or five people and not a Barry Norman in sight!

How daft is that? I asked myself.

Think about it for a minute.

When you have one person reviewing films you get into the mind-set of that person, as I’ve already mentioned but spread between four or five different personalities, how on earth can you get an objective opinion bearing in mind that this panel would not collectively judge each film but one per film.

After that I gave up with the film reviews page altogether and came to this conclusion: If I liked a film then that aspect made it a good film…well, for me at least.

Now-a-days, here in France I tend to watch films on “YouTube” which can be found in their entirety, if you’re lucky, but my first port of call is nearly always Wikipedia, where I can find an honest, objective opinion (I like to think) and some detailed description of the plot, production info, etc, an added bonus.

Therefore, a film is for your own entertainment and enjoyment and if it fills those criteria, it has done its job. ‘Nuff said.

(The answer, by the way, is twice as long as half a piece)

…and, if you have been, thanks for reading.

We love the website imdb (internet movie data base). Can find out lots about every film and actor there. We're often going to look who an actor was and what else they've played in. My husband makes short films so he's also interested in other details like who directed the movie. My most memorable movies (off the top of my head) are Crash, Fracture, As Good As It Gets. I've also started enjoying foreign language films (especially french) such as Conversations With My Gardener. It's interesting that our enjoyment changes according to the space we are in life. I remember the first time I watched The English Patient I thought it was the worst movie despite all the rave reviews and awards. The second time I watched it (about 10 years later) I found it profound, poignant and one of the best movies I've ever seen. Loved your article.

Kim I have never given much to others comments on a film, I tend to make a decisions based on the actors and the story line, and those are what I watch.... I don't watch much..(too busy on the bloody computer) .. but I do tend to choose what I like , that normally turns out to be good... Do watch the odd smash up sometimes but then I only have myself to blame...

Hey Rob, what's an odd smash up, dare I ask?

I always found Oscar winning films with 5 stars etc to be dull and over produced. The film critics liked them however. For me a good Sci-Fi with loads of aliens or a comedy. Good article though Kim.

I agree with Penny Black - it depends on the mood and I rarely bother with reviews. Wherever possible I flick through commercials. Good to see your maths are good...lol.

Hi Kim, I think a lot depends on the mood you're in at the time, lighthearted or serious. I stopped reading reviews some time ago though as many of them give away too much of the plot. Good article.
