Today we are teaching how to make hip hop beats! So sit back, get your creative juices flowing and let's do this! We will go over five steps that need to take place in order to get you on track to making a hit song!
Step One to Make Hip Hop Beats:
First things first, you will need some sort of beat maker. There are a lot of choices out there such as online beat makers, downloadable beat makers and combinations of the two! If you don't have a beat maker yet, get one and then come back!
Step Two to Make Hip Hop Beats:
Next we actually get into making the beats. Pull up your beat maker and let's get started. Whatever system you are using should have the ability to break things down into measures with beats in them, typically a four count. Set your beat maker for 8 measures. Drag and drop your instruments into the beat making area. I recommend a good bass drum sound, hi-hat, snare and maybe an open hi-hat sound. In a measure of four beats put a bass drum sound on the one count of the first measure. Then drop a bass note on the 3rd beat of measure six. Now put a hi-hat sound on 2 and 4 of every measure. Now put a snare sound on beat 1 of measure 3 and 7.
This will give you a very basic beat that you can move things around and play with to create your own rhythms!
Step Three to Make Hip Hop Beats:
Next you need to drag a bass guitar sound into the beat maker. Place a beat on the one count of each measure and then send it to the piano roll to change up the notes. Move the first two notes on G and the next two on C, then the next two on E and the last two on D. This is just one of the many note arrangements that you can do. Move the notes around a little to see what you like!
Step Four to Make Hip Hop Beats:
Now you need some sort of pad sound. Look through your samples and see what you like. Then put a note on beat one of measures on 1, 3, 5, and 7. Make the note extend over two beats in the piano roll. That way the sound holds for two beats before the next beat is played. Place the first note on G, the second on C, the third on E and the fourth on D.
Step Five to Make Hip Hop Beats:
Tweak things and move them around to create the sound that you are looking for and then you will be ready to add your lyrics to it. Make sure you realize though, that making beats takes time and practice! You are not going to nail this instantly! You have to work hard and perfect your talents. It would be a good idea to study music theory and how notes are arranged in order to really make the sounds you want.
If making beats seems like more than you want to take on in order to make hip hop beats, no worries, there are many artists that buy hip hop beats and just focus on the writing and singing of lyrics. I know I personally buy a lot of my beats from a pro that has been making beats for a very long time. There is nothing wrong with that! So if you want, don't make hip hop beats and leave the making to someone else!
