At Last Singer, Etta James, Terminally Ill, Resting at Home In Riverside With Family

Grammy award winning singer Etta James is reportedly in the terminal stages of leukemia as well as hepatitis C and kidney failure according to her good friend and manager, Lupe De Leon. James, born Jamesetta Hawkins in January 1938, has been fighting a number of health problems in recent years. James was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2009 and then hospitalized in the following year with a serious infection. Her latest hospitalization came in May of this year when a urinary tract infection progressed to sepsis.

Ms. James has been performing for much of her life, starting at a very young age in her local church but is most famous for the song "At Last". She has won six Grammy awards during her career and has been inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1993). In 2001, she as also inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. James got her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003 as well. During her career, James has performed with a number of other musical acts, spanning all genres of music, including jazz, rock and gospel among others. Her first album was recorded in 1954.

The singer's two sons, Donto and Sametto are alleging that the news of her failing health was leaked without the family's consent and question whether the actual diagnosis is correct. The sons are convinced that James should be at the hospital rather than cared for in her Riverside home. She is reportedly being cared for by her live in physician, Dr. Elaine James (no relation). Despite her ongoing and declining health problems, her sons have stated that she would like to release another album.

Born to a very young mother and raised by others for a number of years, Etta has fought a number of battles throughout her life, including drug addiction and obesity. She did undergo a gastric bypass surgery in 2003 and lost over 200 pounds. After recovering from the surgery, James told the media that she could sing higher, lower and louder than she ever had before. She had been in and out of a number of rehab facilities over the years and had also faced a number of legal issues because of her drug use.

Both sons are fighting their step father, Artis Mills over the control of the singer's million dollar estate. Fans of Etta James are sending their well wishes to the singer, commenting on Twitter, Facebook and other sites about the talented woman and the one song that almost singularly defines her.
