Hello, fellow bass players! Im sure if you've been playing for some time now you know exactly what sound works for you. But for those who are searching, we have a few things to share with you in our discussion today. As you read, imagine if you would, what a certain sound reminds you of.
Sound tecnique is a choice. You have a wide range of tonal choices to make in terms of your general sound. Do you like the kind of bass that is very heavy?......Imagine a deep rumble, where though your listeners may not be able to distinguish each note you play, the presence is definately there. Some bands prefer their bass player having a sound like this but the down side is that your articulation is hardly heard, this is something you give up for the basic low tone.
However, there is the beauty of tone to help bring out some clarity in your sound.....try adding some treble in small increments, then add a little more midrange than treble. If necessary, get advice from your guitarist as you make these adjustments. Now.....if you are practicing with the band, stand in front of the band, as far away as possible while you are performing. You should be able to hear your notes, individually as you play, instead of just a deep boom, boom, boom. got it?
Now if you prefer a higher tonal sound, then obviously you want to add more treble but balance your midrange accordingly. Do the same in front of band test. If you are hearing a lot of fret noise then you may be carrying too much treble.....This is desired among some bass players but too much high end tone could have you sounding like a guitarist, something not desired by your sometimes criticle audience.
Tone enhancements. There are tons of pedals ans effects that can help you trim your sound to nearly perfection! You just have to give them a try. You could try a graphis equalizer, which expounds on your tone, sort of spreads it out over several bands of frequency. You could even use a little reverb mix to give your sound a little more presence. Some bass players use a digital chorus effect to a dd a slight roundness to their sound.
In either case, you have the choices, just remember the best guitar amps, speakers and effects can only enhanse what you bring to the fore......Your overall abilities are what matters most. You will develop your own unique style and sound also, so again let your tonal choices take back seat to your progress as a strong bass guitarist.
Focus on learning the theory of music and how to incorporate naturalness in all of your performances. Learn how to make music and it's value, part of your life. Everyone will see and hear your progress, that's for sure. in closing, be sure to keep your spirits up, get out there and hear other bass players, learn from them and study their sound....You will make rapid progress. Well be safe, bass man!
