Canadian Country Music Continued

After many hours of practising on my 4 dollar guitar and plenty of blisters on my fingers, I was actually getting pretty good. I started playing along with country music songs on the radio and soon started to sing along. My mother saw how serious I was about learning and sing and playing, that she made a deal with me saying that as soon as I turned 13 years of age and got confirmed, she would take me to the city to buy a guitar of my choice.

Well time flies when you are having fun and soon I was 13 years of age, confirmed and off to the big city to buy a new guitar of my choice. We arrived at the only music store in Edmonton at that time called National Music. When I walked in and saw all the guitars standing and hanging all over I didn.t know where I should start looking. I think my mother thought I would go to the Lone Ranger and Gene Autry guitars.

I walked around for a while looking at various models, when a guitar caught my eye and I went right for it. I asked the gentleman of the store if I could pick it up and try it. He said of course take your time with a huge smile on his face. When I tried out the guitar I knew I would never put it down. The sound was so clear and deep, and so very easy to play I knew this was the guitar for me.

My mother said to me is that the one you like, and I said yes. The store clerk told my mother, he has a good ear for sound and music, and knows what he wants. My mother asked how much it was and just about fainted when the clerk said 173.00 dollars with case. My mother said I made him a promise and I guess I have to keep it and wrote out the check. My mother expected 25.00 dollars at the most because we didn't have much those days. I was the happiest boy ever, as we walked out of the store. I had seen country music artists with the same looking guitar. I found out sometime later that the Martin guitar was the most famous for all country music artists and now a simple farm boy had the same kind. That was the beginning of my entertainment career.
