Clean Up That Stage!

How important is it to be neat and tidy on stage at your gig? Does it really matter? "They came to see the band, not to look at the stage," some band members say...... We will talk on the subject of neat and tidiness on stage, how it can be done, the visual effect on audience and health risks related to poor stage keeping.

"We played a killer show....everything went well, man!....the crowd went nuts, I was glad when some of my friends showed up to the gig' they actually snapped a few great pic's...but when the pictures turned up on Facebook, I couldn't help but notice the backdrop, which showed a pair of my boots, some jumper cables & a pushbroom....sure, I really appreciated the visit from my friends and the fact that they took the time to photograph me but the focus, based upon the comments made was on the items in the background and not the cool action shots! Grrrr!!!" This is a true experience by a fellow musician.

Sure, not everyone is as tidy as others, in fact I often get criticized for my efforts in being neat....but really, like many I believe that there is a place for everything. Have you ever walked on stage, maybe to sit in with a band or even just to say "hey"? I still remember being called up to sit in with a friends band......It was a collision course! 'stuff' everywhere I looked, even the clothes these guys changed from were scattered on the floor. Gross!......So lets figure this out in parts.

Instrument cases. This may take a little discipline at first, but it pays off......as soon as your instrument is removed from its case why not take it off the stage. Try putting it next to the stage, and once everyone has set up their instruments, take all cases together from the stage to an area out of the way. That will be one less problem to deal with....yes, yes, I know....some of these gigs' have little to no room to put your gear but when there is room, we can make it happen.

Wires and cables. What do we do with the never ending power cords and cables? Some Artists use duct tape to secure the wires right down to the stage floor. Use caution, making sure you leave some slack in the wire closest to speakers because they may need to be moved slightly in your final stage set up. Also, be careful that you do not use too much tape as this is miserable and most difficult to remove after the gig' when you're trying to get out and go home or the next hit'.

Beverages and personal effects. Some musicians are notorious for placing drinks on top of an amplifier and speakers ....am I right? lol. You must know where I’m going with this. You guessed right.....wasted beverage in the electronics!!! This could be devastating to the owner of an expensive amp for guitar, bass & keyboards but worse than that it could present danger due to electrical shock! Here is a suggestion, If you bring beverages on stage, keep it on the floor, out of the path of people...oh, I almost forgot, the vocalist has to realize your amplifier is not the table to rest their drinks, during the performance.

Now! When/if you have a photographer shoot the performance, he may even compliment you on a well arranged stage! Yes, you will even feel better in knowing that you've decreased the chances of someone tripping over cables, grabbing your amplifier on the way to the floor and tossing his drink onto your beautiful equipment.....So why not try a few of these ideas and don’t forget to send me some pictures of that stage duuuude!!!

Yes a clean stage is a must. On Sunday morning there are many different people that are going to be walking up and on the stage and we do not want to see them trip on a cord. That and the Pastor is going to up there for awhile delivering his sermon and all eyes are up there. Another reason is appearance, everyone is posting photo's and I want my stage clean so that photo also looks clean. Make the pastor look good, make the band look good, make the promoter look good. I also carry with me on every show a cup holder that clamps on the mic stand, I hate drinks on expensive audio equipment and I know the vocalist is going to have their water on the stage with them. Thanks for the good read and the great article.
