Dude! What is the big fuss over a girl playing guitar? This article is dedicated to the gals out there who exercise their right to rock just like the guy's! Yea, is about time to speak out on the subject and maybe we can show that music is not gender-bent, nor does anybody have the right to exclude any female from the art of guitar playin'.
Playing guitar is not feminine. Wanna' know something that I found out about haters? To my surprise it was more women than men who felt girls should not play guitar.....The most common remark is, "it isn't feminine or becoming of a woman to be playin' a guitar". Tell me, what is so unfeminine about it ...... Don't get me wrong, I've heard enough guys hating on the Idea too. These guys act as though girls are gonna' monopolize the industry!
Here are some encouraging examples: Loretta Lynn, she is a gorgeous woman that sings country music and oops! I forgot to say, she play's acoustic guitar while performing. What about India Irie, she's another super star vocalist, who just happens to be a guitarist, who like Loretta, have sold millions of records. I say, "play on sistas".
Girls, you can do it! You have potential, young lady. Give it all you've got, have lots of fun as you learn the art of music. Just be prepared to turn some heads, especially if you're the flashy type. I noticed that whatever type you develop yourself to be, people will accept it, that is as long as you do. People tend to know when you're fakin' it. Lets use an example of a guy walking down the street wearing a pink sport coat, green pants, orange shoes and a cape......He struts with head in the air like he had not a care in the world. Yes he would get laughed at but it is the sense of confidence he has that makes him proud of his choice in decision. He likely would tend to look at people as though they were odd.
......Point being, develop as yourself before a guitarist. People will have to get used to you and however you want to present your total package......In fact, a girl usually adds to the total popularity of a band, even if she doesn't rock too hard......Your presence will be a plus to any band that wants to look really cool.
If I could make a strong suggestion it would be to learn the theory of music. Get yourself a strong foundation so that your value as a guitarist is undisputed. Learn how to build your own guitar identity, as you build respect in the musical arena and self confidence. Unfortunately, women take quite a hit in society whenever you try to step up to the plate of self enrichment.
Pick up as many guitar chord progressions as possible, along with self control. Yes you have to be on the cutting edge when it comes to controlling your feelings, your temper and your abilities. Never put a less advanced musician down as if you haven't been where he is because we know better, right?
So in conclusion, make a difference to perhaps someone who is less fortunate than you are. Don't let them make some of the same mistakes you made, I know it was rough but consider it experience that you can share with others.....Do take care!
