A flight to your dream, especially if it is a professional ambition will never spare your precious time, nerves and challenges. Usually it is a tough decision to become a professional musician.
Many people wonder whether music is a key way to creative thinking. Their experience of practicing music reflects the development of different qualities such as collaboration, the ability to listen to other people’s points, aptitude for concentration on your past, present and even future. A German guitarist Steve Heyden responded: “Playing music teaches how to deal with others. You sense where you play the main role and where accompany your team”. However the major person you have to deal with is someone who can help you promote your own business. It is your musical manager.
If you want to find such a person you ask three main questions: Who? Why? Where?
The first question is who. A musical manager is an expert or a team of professional agents who make the professional career of a musician flow in the industry. A manager keeps vigilant watch over the commercial side of his client, supports and directs him at his decision-taking process which can influence the development of career.
The second question is why. A musical manager becomes a major person in all your deeds and deals in all realms of your musical career. He searches musical producers, composers, sound recording companies, publishers and even fans. He develops and supports your reputation, evaluates and passes your demo CDs in, works out and releases your media. If there is a necessity he is responsible in hiring additional staff. An artist and repertoire manager is a person who is to understand tastes, labels and market requirements, he can find musicians and sign contracts with them. Moreover, his responsibility is to deal with composers and authors, he should organize records of albums, he chooses singles and collaborates with a PR team. Besides knowing the market A&R managers should have their own sharp musical taste and be good at the music industry. Many representatives of this profession are professional musicians themselves. Even if a manager does not have a specified musical education he has considerable experience and ties with every branch of the music industry.
Usually mutual assistance and respect between a band and its manager are represented in a contract.
The third question is where. Let us divide the profession into two categories. The first one is a professional expert and the second is a novice helper. Both categories have their advantages. A fresh new band usually does not need a well-known expert. It would be much more use of a young band devoted by a person who just adores their creative pieces.
An expert is a person who has great valuable experience. Usually he has many ties with every single branch of the musical industry. His main aim is to make a band profitable that is why he coordinates, navigates and influences every step of his musicians. Such person will be interested in settled projects with a wide circle of fans. He is not an altruist at all and you will have to apply great efforts to get him interested. To find this magic person you can start asking your friends musicians, visit festivals and performances, surf the Internet, read social networks and give advertisements.
Many young bands ask help from their relatives or even friends. Are you ready to entrust many years of your hard work to a person who has no idea about the music industry? If you feel that you can rely on a person and respect his personal qualities – do it and your best friend can become your best music manager!
