For anyone who has a legitimate interest in learning how to make your own beats there are a few basics you will need to understand first. And why am I qualified to give you any info used to make your own beats? During 1997 - 1999 I studied guitar at Leeds College Of Music, after this I moved on to Europe and attended Amsterdam S.A.E. where I studied Audio Engineering.
Making music is not as hard as you may think. If you have the knowledge and talent to be able to play a particular instrument then great - this will be a huge benefit for you. But over the last couple of decades music has developed to a point where it is not necessary to be a qualified musician. This is largely due to the introduction of samples - samples give you the ability to make your own beats with relative ease and can be a very effective way of creating original, vastly alternative, music or songs.
Digital samples are a must to make your own beats especially if you are more inclined to go the direction of techno or rap music. These types of music do not usually work with the analog formats of drum or percussion, these are saved for more middle of the road music variations like rock or britpop, folk etc.
So what do you need to make your own beats and be reasonably successful at it? Simple, you need some sort of drum machine. The drum track will always be the heartbeat to any song - period. Without a drum beat you are stuck in the world of acoustic setups and relying on different musicians built in human tempo ( which can be a little off at times - believe me ). It is always going to be easier to have a steady drum beat to act as a metranome.
There will always be the people who say that term samples of music as cheating - the traditionalists if you will. But let me put this to you - can you afford to rent an orchestra and then manage to fit them into your bedroom to be recorded? Nope, didn't think so. The computer based or digital production software out on the market these days will give you the means to create multi-layered tracks in each song with hundreds of virtual musicians preforming for you.
So when you make your own beats remember that the world is your oyster - there are lots of brilliant quality samples out there and not just drum samples; samples of any instruments. Digital sequencing is needed but there are many low cost options for this type of recording online.
