Thirty six year old country singer, Mindy McCready has been reported missing with her five year old son, Zander according to papers filed by the Cape Coral Police and the Florida Department of Children and Families. But according to the singer, her brother and her publicist, that report has been blown out of proportion and she is not missing. She has also stated that she is aware of an order to return the child to her mother by Thursday afternoon.
McCready lost custody of her son in 2007 after a fight with her mother turned physical. Police were called to the scene and McCready was arrested and charged with a probation violation and resisting arrest. The following year, the troubled singer was admitted to a hospital in Nashville after an apparent suicide attempt. In 2010, McCready made an appearance on the reality show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinsky. During that appearance, McCready had a seizure. Medical testing showed that she had brain damage. She was hospitalized later that same year, but the reason was never disclosed to the press.
Terry Field, a spokesperson for Florida's DCF stated that the agency had asked for an emergency pick up order for Zander after learning that McCready had taken her out of Lee County Florida. Her current family court order allows her visitation with her son but only at her parent's home. If McCready does not bring Zander back by the stated time, an arrest warrant will be issued for her.
McCready posted on her Facebook page that she was not really missing and that she was working to get things straightened out through the court system. Her post included the statement " I did not steal my son. How could I steal something that already belongs to me!" Her brother, Josh also echoed that sentiment. Kat Atwood, McCready's publicist issued a media statement that both McCready and her son are safe, healthy and comfortable. Atwood also said that the story has been played up and that there was no Amber alert issued because there was no missing child. Her statement also stated that this is a case of changing custody, nothing more.
In addition to other problems in the past, Mindy McCready has filed a lawsuit for libel against her mother after she gave a statement to the National Enquirer.
McCready also announced that she is five months pregnant with a set of twins but there has been no further information released, including the identity of the unborn babies' father.
