New Jimi Hendrix Album Announced for 2013

This past Monday, November 26 marked the 70th birthday of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. We all know and love Hendrix. His music inspired millions and reached the hearts and minds of many. His lyrics, though often about peace and love also inspired the listener to think, question society. On Monday the release of a new Jimi Hendrix album, titled "People, Hell and Angels" was announced. The date set for the release is March 5, 2013.

The songs on the album were written to be put on the album following Electric Ladyland. This 2-Part album was supposed to be titled "First Days of the New Sun Rising" but due to the untimely death Hendrix faced at just age 27, he was never able to release. Hendrix wrote the songs between 1968 and 1969. After going through the track listing for the album I certainly see some familiar names, such as "Earth Blues" and "Bleeding Heart", however there are a handful of tracks on this 12 song album that appear new to me.

New Jimi Hendrix Album Nothing Like the Legend?

I am worried however about if this production will be what Jimi would have wanted it to be. I don't mean that in the Bob Marley sense of the phrase, but rather as a musician. Since Jimi was not alive to see through the entire production and mastering of the audio, the sound and overall vibe Hendrix masterfully created may not be the same, or there at all.

It was reported that Eddie Kramer, the producer responsible for mastering all of his studio work was also in charge of mastering the new Jimi Hendrix album. Additionally, the axemaster's groove section from back in the day was also involved in the recordings, including Billy Cox and Buddy Miles.

Maybe I'm just a skeptic but I just can't seem to wrap my head around the idea of it being properly done. 9 times out of 10 when an artists work from decades past is mastered and produced today it comes out sounding like the awful pop-y crap that every loves these days. The music also isn't being produced on the same machines as it would have been if it was finished back in '69, resulting in a noticeably different sound. Any of my friends who still rock out with record players understand what I mean, right fellas?

Hopefully I am just a skeptic. I really do hope that the new Jimi Hendrix album People, Hell and Angels is a masterpiece. However when I read stories like the one I read the other day it just confirms my skeptical suspicions. What story, you might ask? Remember when they unveiled the hologram of Tupac at Cochella? Well, there's talk now about a holographic Jimi Hendrix, as well. Just another example of modern stuff imposing on classic stuff, to put it simply.

Now I leave it to you. What do y'all think? Am I right in thinking this could tarnish some of Hendrix's work? Or do you think that modern technology is capable of producing music to suite that era just as well as this one? Please feel free to leave any thoughts or concerns below.

Me too, though I've heard some version of most of the tracklisting, I'm really eager to hear the new renditions of them as well as the actual lost Hendrix tracks

Nice! Hopefully it works out well - one of my brothers loves this music. He'll enjoy getting it next year, from nostalgia, I suspect, whether it's been well rendered or not;) Good job.

Thanks for the feedback, Cynthia! I agree, I'm sure your brother will love the new jimi hendrix cd whether it's on-point or not. Jimi's always a good time, regardless. Plus I'm interested in hearing some of the horns and percussion he tried out Which, if he's heard about that, I'm sure your brother is interested to hear as well

We will never know if the final production is close to what Jimi would have wanted so we will just have to have faith that the team behind it can do a good job. 1968 a good year the year I was born. Thanks for the heads up will keep an eye out for the new album.

Hey Mark, thanks for the comment. I guess I should rephrase that point... I just don't want them to make the new Jimi Hendrix album have a different sound than he had. Meaning crystal clear, or using processors or effects on the track that weren't even around in his time, you know what I mean? I know Hendrix used some new instruments in his new album so I'm not too concerned with it having a different feel, I kind of expect that.
