Posture - Is It Important?

Lets talk about posture in this article.....Why? Well lets just say that it is relevant to your health. We need to discuss the various positions a guitar or bass player has at his disposal to help in not getting bored stiff or and in pain, especially the next morning.

Related to health issues. Did you know that the way you hold your guitar and the way you stand can have an effect on your body? You may have noticed some guitar and bass players and their stage presence.....Some players look great, while others seem to be bored stiff or how about like a stiff board. I had to teach myself how to stand, as a bass player, sort of letting my weight rest on either my right or left leg.

After performing a couple of sets, my leg used to hurt badly! Thus the reason was because I didn't shift weight from one side to the other, periodically. You could even get a muscle spasm as a result of improper weight balance, even more of a chance if you play a bass guitar that is heavy. What can you do to avoid the pain incurred as a result of standing in one spot on stage, sometimes for hours?

A healthy suggestion. You might exercise some movements that enable you to kind of rock with the music side by side, while keeping your tempo accurate, this method will keep weight distributed more evenly. Slight knee bending is alway a help in staying loose. Some players take advantage of the few moments between songs to do some stretching, but you don't have to go overboard, just a slight stretch here and there. Guitar straps can start to dig in to the shoulders after a couple of hours, but a slight shift a few inches can help, also choose a wider guitar strap so your instrument rests on a wider area of your shoulder.

Some guitar players unknowingly hold the neck of their instrument so tight that the stap is loose, thereby increasing the possibilities of getting a cramp in the arms or back. I found that the fender jazz basses tend to be kind of heavy, which means after a good long set, I want some relief, so I do a lot of shifting back and forth to avoid discomfort. Also, If you play upright, your posture really has to be right because of the tecnique in holding this massive instrument....of course most upright players are quite accustomed to or have found their stance in comfort.

Most drummers already know the perils of bad posture on the kit. Newcomers to this instrument do well to watch the pro's and concentrate on good posture because there lies the tendancy to warp your back after a while, which can obviously be painful to you. Moreover, as drummers you have the additional weight of your cases and we have an amp for guitar and basses alike, even more reason to be concience of posture. Well, hopefully this article has brought some awareness to the fore.....Yes, we have to keep you guys & guyettes in good condition, right?

So if I may alter the saying, "no pain, much gain"! As guitarists, we go through enough hassles without adding body pains into the mix.... Good health to all!

Well said! I am an all round musician, and have developed a bad back over the years from incorrect posture. You should also think about correct footwear.
