When you are working on an album one thing that will pop up in your thoughts is, where am I going to get cd's from? You can take your master copy straight from your home recording studio to get manufactured, just make sure your master sounds good. There are a lot of companies online that can deliver your cd's right to your doorstep. To find them you can do a quick Google search for "cd duplication" or "cd replication".
Cd Duplication
To duplicate is to burn a cd-r. They take your master copy of your album and they burn it to one disc. They then take that disc and burn it to another disc, and so on. Cd duplication is something that lots of artist go with to burn their music to multiple discs. This is the cheaper route if your money isn't all the way right. You can usually get store ready cd's for about $1 a piece but some places have more discounts.
In the early stages of a music career, most start out buying short run cd duplication packages. It's a quick order of cd's to get your project out. This is ok as most artist starting out, are trying to gain fans and get heard. This is good for selling your album at shows and in the streets. Most albums that are sold in stores are not duplicated.
Cd Replication
If you have a bigger budget and/or want to be more professional then you should get your cd's replicated. This is what the big record labels do. If you ever bought a physical album out of the store most likely it was a replica. It takes more to make a replica then a duplication.
This is called pressing up your music. When you buy replica printing, they take the master copy of your album and they create something called a glass master. The glass master is used to make something called a nickel stamper and a metal like substance. This is what it takes to make a replica of your master. Let's look at the word "replica", if you look up the definition, it will say that it is an exact copy of something. "Exact" copy.
So if you burn music to a disc then burn the same music to another disc, that is not a replica that is called duplication. You have to make the whole physical cd from scratch exactly the same for it to be a replica. That is why most artist starting their music career don't buy replica printing because it is too expensive, unless they are with a record label who funds their brand.
