The Music Industry These Days

What has happened to the music industry these days? Anything that's considered popular is either a song that is auto-tuned or just another remake of a song, or a remake of a remake of a song. These days kids seem to be getting softer in the brain with what we're fed in the media. It doesn't seem like there's much of a profound meaning anymore. The lyrics seem to either involve partying hard or dancing until the world ends.

There was a time, actually a few different eras where mainstream music was either good to listen to or at least tolerable. The 60's had blues and beginning of classic rock among very talented musicians, including the British invasion. The 70's had a great beginning to soul music and funk, although disco was being introduced as well.

Than the 80's came and it was either disco, punk, alot of hair-metal (which I enjoy the odd rock ballad song) and the start of new wave, oh and don't forget rap/hip-hop was approaching a popularity as well. So far most of the music above sounds pretty good, especially when it's pop, but maybe not so much the disco, don't get me wrong, disco duck can be a pretty entertaining song but a little too much disco would have been the death of our society.

When the 90's came a whole new approach in not only music but pop music as well entered the world, and that was grunge. Now this sound was so edgy, so emotional yet numbing and had a mix taste of blues, punk, metal and rock in it, if you ask me that's a pretty solid blend of music in one genre. With Nirvana leading this whole new genre as well as taking over any blues music left to spare, this new sound conquered the country of America beginning from Seattle and influencing the rest of the world. It really gave "Smells Like Teen Spirit" a whole new meaning.

Once the 90's ended and the tragedies of Kurt Cobain were fully mourned, we were left with a terrible after taste of pop rocks in our ears within the new millennium. New Rock was mainstream and please I think we have heard enough ballad rock songs in one lifetime. Including hip-hop/rap (and not even the good type of 90's hip-hop/rap, but meaningless degrading hip-hop), alot of lead female pop singers with the introduction of auto-tune (which should almost be banned, but would just make meanstream worse without tuning those singer's voices).

So the question is what happened to mainstream music? Has it all been done and now we have to rely on machines and professional lyricists to create music. What happened to the raw emotional sound we had and is it only going to get worse? I sure as hell hope not, because pop music has such a huge influence on society and if we keep relying on this robotic sound than we will lose all motivation as a human race not only in music, but in life itself.

Hi Jesse, nice article! Haha, this must be why I hardly ever listen to the radio anymore, although I love music. It's usually either the music itself on most radio stations that irritates me or it's the never ending commercials. :)
