The Van Has Broken Down!

Scary words indeed! But words that have been uttered far too many times. What do you do when your vehicle stalls? We will discuss these points and more in our article. Obviously, this situation could mean the gig' is cancelled or and it could mean you're gonna’ lose your equipment if, by chance you leave your disabled vehicle, even for just one moment.

What do I do? First, don't be overtaken by the situation. Assuming that you carry a cellphone, call a reputable towing company or a friend, one who will be able to help because the idea is to get that vehicle moved to a shop, even if a safe area is where you want to have it towed to, at least until you can sort things out.

Gotta' relate an experience. Let's stop here for now. True, I am a musician/author but I earn a living as a heating and air conditioning technician who loves to write articles like this as a result of life experiences, it’s all true and honestly, at this very moment I am waiting for a tow truck to pick up my work van, Isn't that a kick in the head. Well, as I sit in the hot sun outside my disabled vehicle, on a not so nice south side of Chicago street, I got to thinking about something I experienced about 15 years back. I was driving from work to a gig when suddenly my truck stalled.

Unfortunately, I wasn't the only one aware of my dilemma. A group of guys drove past me and were staring, as if to say, "we got one".....It was an isolated street and it happened to be raining very hard. I know I had to do something because all 3 of my fender jazz basses were in the back, along with my amplifier system. Also, my personal safety did occasionally cross my mind.

I knew these guys were coming back so I got out, raised the hood, started pushing and pulling on wires and prayed to my god Jehovah, like never before.... This is no exaggeration but when I saw the car coming back around, I jumped in my vehicle and it started right up! It actually started, and as that car pulled up behind me, I took off and made the gig a few minutes late.

Practical suggestions. Point being made, you cannot abandon your vehicle. Keeping in mind my personal experience, you have to assume somebody is watching you. Obviously, while waiting for help you see someone suspicious walk towards you, it is best by all means to walk away from the vehicle.

However, if the opportunity allows, upon seeing this individual walking pass, you may step out of vehicle, leaning in the window pretending to be talking to someone inside the vehicle. This can be effective because I'm doing it now as we speak....I even put the cellphone against my face and pretend to be talking to someone periodically.

Criminals can be quite stupid so you have to take advantage of that to save yourself from harm and loss of property. No, you don't necessarily have to stand guard over your disabled vehicle with a shot gun and grenades; just use what god has endowed each of us with....practical wisdom.

So in conclusion, you obviously know how to make music something special in your lives but be sure to balance that with making practical wisdom of foremost importance in your life, reflective in the sometimes split second decisions we make......take good care.
