This article is dedicated to the hard working vocalists who at some point want to generously share the limelight for just a song.....only to have the unthinkable happen. We will discuss the unthinkable in the body of our article but for now, I think a lot of a person who gets the audience involved in their performance, giving them something to take home and remember.
What is your style? Some singers involve their audience extensively. Then there are others who prefer to stick to a format and not sway one way or another. Regardless which profile fits you, there is a job to do and you must take that job seriously or the establishment will not see much reason to retain you.
Beware of the unthinkable! In a spirit of enjoyment and humility, some singers allow individuals to come up and sing along with the vocalist or just hand over the mic' to a person because they say that they can sing. There was once a vocalist that did just that.....She had the audience in the palm of her hand. She at some point asked if there were any singers in the audience. There was a younger lady that said she sang and when the vocalist asked her to come up on stage, the young lady said no......
The vocalist insisted that the young lady came on stage and finished the song for her. Well she did finish the song and she also blew the vocalist away! The audience quickly responded by boo'ing the vocalist because the young lady was not allowed to do another song. That is the unthinkable that can and sometimes does happen in the entertainment business, so one must guard against this by not being too quick to give up your microphone.
You have to be in control at all times, as a vocalist. Actually, we musicians do well to follow the same advice in not being so quick to give up your gig. Some individuals are known to go from place to place, crashing gigs' just intentionally making the working performer look bad but this will never happen to you if you use extreme caution when it comes to people dropping by to sit in on your show, namely people you don't even know.
If you have had extensive vocal training, the theory of music in part, is a vital component that puts you on a level some find hard to achieve. Hence, the applause you receive as a vocalist is what you deserve. You learned how to make music a special part of your personal life. Therefore, continue on your journey in the vocal world, not being oblivious to less experienced singers but setting good examples for them, helping where you can, yes always willing to give back where you can.
