There have been so many changes over the last 25 years in the live music industry, I don't know where to begin. It doesn't seem that long ago that Portland, Oregon had the most live music clubs in the US. Yes, that's the truth. The live music scene here in the Portland metro area was huge - fun - invigorating. We were young(er) and in the midst of all of it. Great times. Great memories. But now, times have changed.
Today was spent reading about trends in the live music market. It seems that after 15 years of growth, last year saw a huge dive in ticket sales for summer concerts. Many concerts were cancelled. They spoke a lot about the "new generation of entertainment." Pollstar stated that of the top 50 acts that toured, there was a 15% drop in gross sales. They blame this on the current economy and high gas prices. I personally think there is much more to it than that.
Casino entertainment is feeling the hit, too. Revenue is down in Vegas for the the fourth month in a row this year. We all know how that affects entertainers that perform in those casinos. There are so many "choices" for entertainment nowadays. With earbuds in every ear, cell phones streaming video, and addictive computer games, it's no wonder people are staying home more. You used to have to "go out" for entertainment. It's no longer true. You can have almost any type of entertainment at home in your own personal "theater." The ticket cost is much lower and the quality is "almost" as good. To me, it's just not right.
There are so many musicians that put their heart and soul into their music. Many musicians "have to" play the music that fills their soul. It's what makes them live - be alive. I can understand that. But unfortunately, things change. But there is one change I've noticed, that I think is really good. Musicians are now able promote their own music because of the internet. They can make their own CD's and sell them. They don't have to count on a "manager" to propel them forward. The opportunities are still there for the original artist. Even more so because of the times. The rise in "indie rock bands" is astronomical. You would think being a talent agent that I would know what that term meant, but I didn't. I had to look it up. It means bands that are "working within the network of independent record labels." Bands are promoting themselves and creating their own successes. Wow. That's awesome. I think it's about time there was a change in unscrupulous managers and record labels. Musicians don't get paid enough as it is - that's one thing that hasn't changed.....
