3 Awesome Benefits Of Learning Blues Guitar

Jimi Hendrix was once quoted, "See, that's nothing but blues, that's all I'm singin about. It's today's blues." For decades now blues has been a huge outlet for musicians to let out raw emotion on any topic that hits home for them. Love, money, work, politics, it's all blues baby. There are dozens of benefits gained from learning blues guitar, I want to talk to you about a few of my favorites.

1. Learning Blues Guitar is Easy

Now before you advanced blues players out there start sharpening your axe's, let me explain. For a beginning to intermediate guitar player, learning the basics of blues is fairly simple to do. The standard 12 bar blues rhythm is based off of a I IV V chord pattern; that's only 3 chords!

What I IV V (One, Four, Five) means is you use the Root (I), Sub-Dominant (IV) and Dominant (V) Chords to create the rhythm part. To explain further, the musical alphabet goes from A-G. Let's say for example your blues song is in the key of D. Your 3 chords would be D, G and A. You choose the 1st, 4th and 5th notes in the musical alphabet. See the list below for more of a visual explanation.

  1. A (Dominant Key - V)
  2. B
  3. C
  4. D (Key of song - Root - I)
  5. E
  6. F
  7. G (Sub-Dominant Key - IV)

I hope that cleared that up a little. If not feel free to leave any questions in the comment box below. Next, a lot of the standard 12 bar blues solo's or lead's are using easy, closed position scales. The most commonly used being the minor pentatonic. A closed position scale means that when you play this scale, each finger can be assigned to a certain fret. You do not need to move your hand up or down the neck.

2. Playing Blues Guitar is Fun

Since learning the fundamentals of blues is fairly simple, it makes playing it a lot of fun! One of my favorite things to play when I'm just jamming is the Blues Shuffle. The blues shuffle is a very simple rhythm for beginners to learn made up of the 3 guitar chords you learned about above. With a little bit of palm muting and improvisation you can riff on 3 chords for hours. As long as you stay in time and on tempo you can mix up the chord count as much as you want.

3. Your Rhythm Guitar Will Thank You

Blues guitar is all about feeling. The roots are simple for a reason: the essence of the song lies in the life and hands of the guitarist. You let your emotions flow from your fingertips to the fretboard. By doing this you will be almost instinctively taking a non-rhythmic scale and playing it in a rhythm completely your own. Additionally, keeping your 12 bar rhythms in time is excellent practice for your rhythm guitar. Just play with the chord counts.

I hope this article has inspired you to go out and learn some blues guitar licks or rhythms. These are just some of the reasons why I love playing blues guitar and believe you will to. If you are considering learning, I hope this has helped you make up your mind.

If you have any thoughts, questions or comments, please leave them below. I'll respond as soon as I am able. Until next time, keep shreddin'!

Hi Robert! Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the article/lesson. I agree, Blues guitar is a fantastic outlet to express yourself musically, as well as to connect with other musicians. The first "rhythm" I teach all my students, regardless of what genre they ultimately want to play, is the Blues shuffle. It is truly an invaluable and fun riff to know and play on.
