B Chord: Guitar Players Mastery Lesson

Many guitar players avoid learning the b chord. In my last lesson I taught you the 7 essential guitar chords you must learn as a beginner. I intentionally left the b chord off of that list because I didn't want you to give up on learning guitar. Many guitar players avoid learning this chord altogether for really only one reason: It's really friggin difficult. In this lesson I am going to teach a method to learning the b chord guitar players will find fairly easy.

Before we begin I just want to reinforce that the b chord is quite difficult. However I want you to remember that every minute spent practicing is another minute closer to mastery of the chord and, ultimately, the instrument. Okay? Let's begin...

What to Expect

When you first start to learn the b chord you will most likely encounter a pretty big road block. This road block is one commonly referred to as 'dead notes'. Since it is often the first barre chord guitarists learn, most find that it sounds very off from what a recording of the b chord sounds like. Don't fret, you will get it soon enough (heh, see what I did there?). The good news is that the chord is close to the headstock, so pressing the strings down will be slightly easier than a barre on say, the 7th fret.

Easy Ways to Learn the B Chord

  1. Practice- I know, you saw that coming. However as Will Smith and probably some other famous dude said, "The truth is the only thing that will ever remain constant." And the truth is, practice is the only way to perfect anything.
  2. Start Small!- When properly playing the b chord guitar players will often barre strings 5-1. That is a 5 string barre, which IS quite difficult. However the F guitar chord only requires you to barre 2 strings down (the 1st and 2nd strings). This chord is much easier. Begin by learning smaller barre chords until you've got them mastered and feel ready for 5 or 6 string barre's.
  3. Use Advanced Learning Techniques- There are a few different techniques a guitar player can use when trying to learn difficult chords. These are not to be mistaken as a replacement for practice but rather to supplement practicing. Some of the advanced learning techniques I am referring to are the 'Press & Release' method, visualization and a few others. I highly recommend you look into and work on all of these techniques. You will experience a dramatic improvement in your progress as a guitar player.

When Will You Start Seeing Progress?

If you actively incorporate these tips and tricks into an effective practice schedule, you should start seeing results rather quickly. With my students, they often return a week after me teaching them these techniques and have almost mastered the b chord. The key is being persistent and not letting the struggle hold you back. You must take the hardships as a personal challenge against yourself. You need to accept that challenge and prove to yourself that you can do it. Thousands have learned it before you and will continue to learn it. There is absolutely no reason why you can't do it too.

The B Chord Guitar Players Hate

Well, this wouldn't be a lesson on the b chord if I didn't actually teach you how to play it. There are a few methods of playing the chord but I will teach you the way I find easiest. Barre your index finger across every string on the second fret except for the low E string. Then, press your ring (3rd) finger down on the D, G and B strings on the 4th fret. Play every string except for the Low E string.

The TAB would look something like this:

E: 2

B: 2---4

G: 2---4

D: 2---4

A: 2

E: X

I hope this lesson helps you learn the b chord, as well as other difficult barre chords. As always, I am always available for extra help. If anything about this lesson has confused you or if you just have a general question regarding learning the b chord, please feel free to leave it in the comments section below.

Haha, that's pretty interesting. That 'power' barre chord is one of my favorite shapes for improvising rhythms (f chord) but I've always found it much easier to play successfully than the b chord
