Bass Drum - How To Make Yours Sound Great

Are you annoyed with having a bass drum that sounds nothing like the bass drum of your favourite drummers? Are you tired of having massive annoying overtones coming out of your bass drum. Well I can tell you now that you are not doing the correct things to make your bass drum sound good. The good news is that having a nice sounding bass drum is relatively easy and does not take a lot of work.

Why your bass drum does not sound good. The most common reasons why a bass drum doesn’t sound all that great:

Not tuned well – A lot of drummers who do not know what they are doing will not have their bass drum tuned well, while tuning a bass drum is a lot easier than tuning others drum, you need to make sure you put the effort into tuning it correctly.

Not dampened – This is the most common reason for having a bas sounding bass drum. There is nothing that dampens the drum which means that it has a hell of a lot of overtones and sounds relatively high pitched as a result.

How to fix this:Drum tuning - Make sure that all of the tension rods are even around the drum, especially on the batter head of the drum. Also try not to tune your bass drum to high as doing this will not give you that nice low end sound you are looking for.

Dampen the drum – The easiest way to do this is to chuck some old clothes, rugs or pillows inside the bass drum. This will eliminate the annoying overtones that come from the drum and give it that nice punchy kick sound. Another more effective way of doing this is to buy a drum head that has damper built into it. These heads do cost a little more money than a regular bass drum head, but are well worth it as they can make the drums sound really awesome when tuned right.

Beater side - Depending on your preference and style of music, you may want to use the plastic side of the beater, this will give the drum a bit more punch to it. If you are going to do this, I would highly recommend putting a bass drum patch on your skin so the plastic beater doesn’t damage your drum head.

Overall when it comes to having a good bass drum you need to make sure you have tuned your drum well, as well as dampened your bass drum. Remember try not to tune the drum to high and focus on getting some low end punch from your drum and if you implement the above strategies it will sound great in no time.
