Playing guitar is becoming a very popular hobby among many people. This is no surprise, guitar is a lot of fun! Unfortunately, it’s also pretty difficult to learn; which is not so much fun. In fact, sometimes it genuinely sucks. We don’t like that mentality though. In this article I am going to tell you some easy guitar chords for learning guitar and why you should learn them when you're starting out.
The Easy Guitar Chords:
- A
- Am
- C
- D
- E
- Em
- G
These should be your “Core” guitar chords. They are simple, open chords and they won’t push your finger strength. In addition to this they have very similar finger positioning. To make a chord easy for a beginner to learn, these are key components to focus on.
The Trick to Clean Chord Transitions
Among all of these chords, also often known as “Cowboy Chords” or “Campfire chords”, each has at least 1 finger that doesn’t have to move in a transition. For example, from E minor to G, your index finger does not move, and your middle moves up 2 strings and over a fret and add your ring to the high E. Another example is C to E; From the C (major) position the only finger you need to move is your ring finger to the 2nd fret, 4th string.
There are many similar patterns like this with guitar chords. The trick is to try and find as many of them as you can. At times I’ve spent days trying to find a clean transition, only to realize the “common shape” was a barre. In short, making it a habit to find these connections now will benefit you much more in the future.
A Final Thought for You..
I urge you to seek out and learn as many techniques as possible when trying to learn guitar chords. If you’re having trouble with transitions, remember to ask yourself if there are any fingers that can remain in the same place, including barres. However, if you’re having trouble learning the actual chord, do a little research and if your answer doesn’t come up, always ask for help. There are several easy ways to learn chords, and the interweb is chalk full of people willing to teach you.
Hopefully you were able to take a thing or two away from this article. I do believe that properly practicing these techniques will make the learning process much easier for you. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments below. I tend to be around.
