Guitar Finger Exercises - Start Shredding Today!

You want to know the truth? Every guitarist faces the frustration at one point or another. That feeling of just not being able to get your hands working together with one another. You know what I'm talking about.. Your left hand can shred the neck, but your picking is completely off-beat. You try your hardest to get the picking up to speed but no matter how hard you try your accuracy is way off. The opposite is also very possible, in that you can pluck the strings at warp speed but the fingers on your fretting hand just become a confused, tangled mess once the tempo picks up. Does any of this sound familiar? With the proper guitar finger exercises you will rapidly see increases in your speed, dexterity, accuracy and even your soloing skills.

In this lesson I am going to teach you the advantages to adding specific guitar finger exercises to your day-to-day routine. I will explain not only which exercises you should be focusing on, but also categorize the benefits of each one and give different applications of the exercises.

In this lesson you will learn to use guitar finger exercises to:

  1. Warm Up
  2. Increase Speed
  3. Increase Accuracy
  4. Increase Dexterity
  5. Improve Your Soloing

Putting Guitar Finger Exercises In Your Daily Warm Up

First, let’s not ignore what these guitar finger exercises should be used for. Ideally, you want to be doing at least some of the exercises in your warm up. If you aren’t, you should be warming up before each time you practice. Doing this will help stretch the muscles in your fingers out and get the blood flowing. This is also important to avoid injury.

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI’s) are extremely common among musicians, especially guitarists. Though not all cases are severe or a huge life-altering change, most musicians will face carpal tunnel syndrome or something along those lines at one point or another throughout their musical career. However you don’t have to be one of those musicians! Warming up with these guitar finger exercises will greatly reduce your chances of getting an RSI in your lifetime.

How Can Guitar Finger Exercises Increase Accuracy?

Ever hit the metal fret bar itself trying to learn to play a guitar solo? How about miss the right string all together? Many guitarists have a problem with accuracy. Some, it only affects when playing at higher tempo’s, but the rest of it often feel it even at the slowest speeds. Sometimes jumping down the neck and skipping three strings can just be confusing for the hand and fingers. I get that, it’s okay. With the right guitar finger exercises, primarily scalar guitar finger exercises, you will see, and more importantly experience, drastic increases in your accuracy in just a week or two.

This process can simply be broken down into a 5 step system:

  1. Choose A Scale, these exercises allow you to choose any scale
  2. Learn the scale at 60 BPM, Quarter notes (Use a metronome)
  3. Work the tempo up to an impressive speed
  4. Drop the tempo and start to skip strings in the scale
  5. Add Variations

Using Guitar Finger Exercises to Increase Speed and Soloing Ability

Let’s face it, not everyone can play like EVH, Slash, Paige or Hendrix. These guys were masters of their instrument. However let’s also be realistic, you could play a little faster. Or Your solos could use some work. And if you’re saying no to both of those, I don’t know why you’re reading this because you must be a guitar god. Now for the rest of us, choosing the proper guitar finger exercises can make a world of a difference in our soloing ability. If you add phrasing and other advanced techniques to the above example you will begin to write some very cool leads and guitar solos. Just make sure you pay very close attention that you are playing very accurately in-time with the metronome. This part of the guitar finger exercises is critical to building speed and developing rhythm in your guitar playing.

Which Guitar Finger Exercises Will Increase Dexterity the Most?

Want to be able to practice for longer than 30 minutes without your fingers hurting? 20 minutes? Please tell me no less than that, though... If you can’t practice for at least 20 minutes you should probably see a doc about some type of hand rehab or something. Anyway, I digress... Chromatic guitar finger exercises will increase your dexterity when playing guitar tenfold. No more getting sore fingers super early on, no more getting Twister Hand Syndrome. Coming up with chromatic scales in a single position on the guitar is a simple, ey effective, tool to increase your playing ability. These guitar finger exercises are easily my favorite ones and for a few reasons. I could list probably about a dozen but I'm going to try and wrap things up for you. The chromatic finger exercises allow you to gradually develop raw speed without having to move your hand all over the fretboard; without having to even change what finger hits what fret. These guitar finger exercises are by far the simplest, most effect exercises I know.

There you have it. With the right chromatic and scalar guitar finger exercises you will be well on your way to playing and practicing longer, faster and better than ever before (Sounds like an Erectile Disfunction commercial, right? Haha). I’m being serious, though guys and gals. Put these exercises in your warm up every day and you’ll be amazed at your progress and left wondering- what took you so long? I hope you found this lesson helpful and please feel free to leave any questions or comments below.

Excellent! Mixing it up has helped me a lot in building dexterity but I've never approached it like this with my scales. I'm definitely incorporating it! Thanks for recommendation.

Hey Jim! Thank you for your comment. Apologies for my delay. I never saw this until now, hopes that you can forgive haha. Anyway, yes- using scales can be incredibly powerful in helping you develop not only dexterity but muscle memory. This muscle memory helps you "synchronize" your left and right hand when playing guitar. By this, I mean you are far less likely to fret the wrong string and pluck the right one. ...Or vice versa. Another way to incorporate this exercise (should you be up the the challenge) is to do the exercises with arpeggio's as well. Good luck!

Spot on and well written. I have done so many of these in my career. I have certain finger tapping exercises i use day to day. Have trained myself when in certain situations, like traffic lights, etc.. to tap assigned exercises. I have been doing it so long it is now done automatically. Keep these coming!

Thank you, Shawn. I appreciate the feedback. It's great to hear about other guitarists applying these techniques, makes me feel like I'm doing something right haha. You're absoultely right though, it does soon become second nature. Definitely important for new guitarists to remember, because they can get frustrating.
