Having a booth in your studio is a good way to get the best sound out of your vocals. Why do you think every professional recording studio has one. People record music everyday with out one but think about what a booth actually does. It boxes your sound in. When that happens your voice is more present, and it also makes less air go into the mic, that's always good.
There are different ways to make your booth. It depends on where you want to set it up at. I remember we had a booth set up in the garage, right in the middle. We measured everything out, went and got some wood from home depot, nails, hammer, and some all of those things. When you make your booth the key is to get the door to shut real good, if it's slightly open you are defeating the purpose of having a booth in the first place.
First we built the frame, the sides and the top. It stood about 8 ft high and was about 4 or 5 ft wide all the way around. This is the way we wanted it, you can build yours any size you like, just make sure at least 1 person can fit in it. Sometimes 2 people are needed in the booth at the same time so keep that in mind.
After we got the frame built, we went to work soundproofing the inside. We had bought some studio soundproofing foam from Guitar Center. We put as much as we could afford in there. Stapled them to the walls and made sure the space on the wall the was going to be behind the mic was extra padded.
We went and got new longer outlet cords for the mic and headphones. You can get the extender cord for your headphones as most do not come with a good amount of length, you need a lot of leverage on these types of things so you can move around with ease in your studio.
The last thing we did is cut out a window on the side of the booth, just for engineer purposes. We like to signal to each other when we're ready to record, or for different things like that. It's cool to see someone in the booth doing their thing, from the outside. After that we had our booth, we made lots of music in there, I plan on making a newer recording booth soon.
