Everyone learns at a different rate, so there is not just one answer to this question. To start playing guitar online you do need to make sure that you have enough time to practice, and the most important thing you need to have in mind is that to learn guitar is a journey, not a destination, which means that there is always something new to learn. Having fun with the guitar is almost inevitable and that is the whole point of learning to play this instrument.
The truth is that to start dominating the major chords, it usually may take up to a month if you practice every day, exaggerating, usually it takes less than a month. After you know the basic chords it is time to start playing popular songs that have three or four chords only.
Let me give you an idea of how long it may take you to learn guitar, based on real time.
1-3 months: within three months you are going to be able to learn popular songs such as Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd. This is a pretty easy song and you can ask any one that plays guitar and they will tell you that most people start playing guitar with songs like these.
3-6 months: you should start learning new and different techniques, practice songs that require different chords that the ones you are used to, and if possible, get an electric guitar if you don’t have one already to learn things you can’t on an acoustic guitar. 6 months – 1 year: within a year you will be able to learn songs with a higher difficulty level; now, I’m going to mention the following bands because I like heavy metal, but riffs from Megadeth and Iron Maiden are the ones that I can recommend, but there are others, depending on your musical taste that you could start playing.
1- 2 years: After you have been playing for a year or two, you notice that your fingers are at a whole new level and you have the ability to learn songs really fast. Many guitar players use similar techniques which makes learning new stuff easy for you.
2- 3 years: at this point you should try different types of music, like blues or jazz, that is of course, if you haven’t begun to learn jazz guitar or blues guitar. You can become a more complete musician by doing this and you will learn how to improvise, since there are a ton of scales that you can put in a song when you are playing live.
3- 5 years: If you have been playing guitar for five years, learning new things and practicing every day, then you are unstoppable, you could start teaching guitar to others, you could open your own music academy, everyone will want you in their band and you will have probably several guitars already for different types of music.
And even after your journey as a guitarist for five years, you will see that there is still a lot to be learned, or to be created by you. Now, as you can see on the chronogram I gave you, you won’t learn guitar overnight, it requires time and effort but it is worth it. Good luck my friend.
