How To Repair Guitar Fret Wear And Tear

Why do a guitars frets and fret boards wear out?

Because oils and dirt build up over time from the musicians hand. This nasty build-up starts to wear little pits into the fret board as if it were sandpaper. This wearing of the fret board will make playing a whole lot less enjoyable and is bad in general for the guitar. Ouch!

Dust, moisture, and different human byproducts can build up into the finish over time and make it look murky. There are good cleaning kits you can purchase at hobby stores or guitar shops. You need to get a good lint free cloth while you are at it.

The guitar shouldn't get that dirty to begin with if you've been wiping it down regularly. Fretboard gunk can cause your strings to wear down as well, so don't let it accumulate. Electric guitar strings are metal after all. What happens when metal and moisture meet?

So What Do You Do?

If the wear seems really bad I would probably leave it to a professional luthier or a guitar technician to give it a good look over.

It sometimes involves cutting into worn part of the fret board in really thin layers in order to create thin wood fibers. Then the fibers are raised and they pack wood dust of the same color as the fingerboard in between the fibers. Glue is then wicked into those fibers and after a good sanding it is done.Trust me, you really need to leave this to professionals.

Sometimes if guitar fret wear is bad enough you just need too replace the fret board. Many stores carry guitar necks' but they are pretty pricey. You won't usually have to do this if you do these three things.

-Clean your instrument every 3 months or so.

-Have a pro look it over once a year and make yearly adjustments

-Put the guitar in a case after every use

There is another possibility. I also heard on a forum that pressing down too hard on your string can also cause fret wear and tear.

Wear and tear on a fingerboard can cause playing to be a chore instead of something you actually enjoy. If you find it hard to play a note without crazy buzzing going on it can be due to:
