Jamplay Review: Rip Off Or Goldmine?

Private guitar lessons can cost you thousands of dollars each year. In today's tech savvy world, online guitar lessons have become a powerful alternative to private ones. Since 2006 Jamplay has offered online guitar lessons at a reasonable cost. Is a membership really worth it, though?

1. Jamplay's Learning System

Jamplay feature's a 4 Stage learning system. These Stages are:

  • Beginner Guitar Lessons
  • Genre & Skill Based Lessons
  • Song Lessons
  • Songwriting Lessons

The majority of the site's 4,000 guitar lessons are held in the first 2 phases of the system. There are around 2-300 song lessons and 75 song writing lessons. Every phase features lessons for both electric & acoustic, as well as guitar & bass.

One lesson component I really commend Jamplay on is their attention to theory. From lesson 1, stress is put on learning the fretboard, understanding chords, scales and basic guitar theory.

Anyone who knows my guitar lessons and teaching style knows I believe this is vital. This leads me to the next section, Jamplay's learning tools and features.

2. Jamplay's Teaching Tools & Games

The teaching tools are what I love most about my Jamplay membership. I just finished explaining the importance of learning the fretboard. One powerful resource that Jamplay offers is the fretboard memorization game. That's right: game.

My newer students always groan at learning the fretboard, and I get it. Learning all the different note positions, sharps and flats, is very dry. Even the exercises for learning the notes are pretty boring.

The solution that Jamplay has created with this game is excellent. You can choose different sections of the fretboard to study/get quizzed on.

You can customize many different variables to make it a truly customizable study session. Additionally you can see how you scores stack up against the rest of the 2,000+ member community.

The fretboard memorization game is just my favorite tool. Some other great learning tools a Jamplay membership offers are a note identification game, pitch recognition, and music notation quizzer.

Together, these 4 games create a fun learning powerhouse for a subject that is normally like watching paint dry.

3. More Jamplay Features

Once you have a solid foundation built you will want to begin to explore different musical paths. You will need new challenges and inspiration. The old riffs and licks you used to go to will become increasingly repetitive. Spicing things up is very important.

For this, Jamplay has many great features to help keep you moving. Some of these include:

  • Massive Lick & Riff Library
  • Complete Chord & Scale Library
  • Advanced Chord Identifier
  • Over 400 Professional Backing Tracks

4. The Artist Series

Jamplay has over 70 professional guitar teachers. Many of these teachers you'll likely recognize, as they're members of popular bands of several different genres. This allows finding a teacher that fits your learning style much easier.

Additionally, having many professional guitarists on roster means authentic song lessons. I mean, who better to teach you how to play a song than the person who wrote it right?

The other half of the artist series is the "In the style of.." section. Learn how to play riffs legends like Santana, Satriani, Hendrix, and more, played. This is one of my favorite ways to spice up my guitar practice routine when I get caught in a repetitive rut.

5. Conclusion

I really hope this review of Jamplay guitar lessons was helpful. I highly recommend you read a more in-depth Jamplay review before making a decision. Choosing which company to side with is a big choice, make an educated one!

Do you have a Jamplay membership? What do you think about it? Do you like it? If you have any questions or comments please leave them in the box below. I'll respond to you within 24 hours, usually much faster. Thanks!
