Learn to Play Pentatonic Guitar Scales

The Pentatonic Scale- Become a Great Guitar Soloist.

By learning to play the pentatonic guitar scales you will quickly develop your own guitar style. It is one of the most used scales in guitar music and is simple enough to learn as it uses only 5 notes. For example the A minor scale will have the notes A,C,D,E and G in the scale.

In this article we will go through some of the techniques used to make this scale sound effective. Along with the three chords that sound great when played within the scale, the minor, major and dominant 7th chords.

Using minor chords along with the minor pentatonic scale you will get a dark moody sound. By playing say the A minor chord over the A minor pentatonic scale you will hear how they work well together to create that sound. To keep it simple to start off using the scale along with its main chord, use the A minor chord with the A minor pentatonic scale. Quite similarly, when you are playing D minor chord you can play the D minor pentatonic scale.

Major Chords - All Major chords have a relative minor chord, for instance the A major chord will have a relative minor chord of F#(sharp) Minor. So the easiest way of locating which is the relative minor chord of a major chord is simply by taking a note that is three frets below the original root note of the concerned major chord. When doing this you will find the relative minor more easily. Using the similar technique you can find the relative minor chord to all major chords.

Dominant 7th Chords-

When it comes using minor pentatonic guitar scale along with the Dominant 7th Chords you can create tension between notes. You can use the root note an walk down the scale by a tone to locate the dominant 7th chord. For example using the E7 note you can use several scale shapes. The relative minor, which will be F# minor, or the A minor penatonic scale. The techniques explained hear will give you a good grounding on some of the guitar theory side of things. Dont get too caught up with this to start with but bear it in mind when using pentatonic guitar scales.

So just master them and see the difference for yourself. The pentatonic scales are used in connection with many other styles of music and is one of the most flexible scales to learn. Most Rock, Pop, Metal and Blues songs use elements of the pentatonic guitar scales. It can also find its way into some classical guitar music!

For a scale which uses only 5 notes it can have an awesome effect when played correctly. Its simplicity is its main advantage as most guitarist learn the 5 notes within the scale then will add more notes to create a different flavour. For example by adding a D# note to the A minor penatonic scale you will add a blues sound to the scale. Its versatility leads to great solos and killer riffs. By adding additional notes you will create more unique sounds and melodic patterns to your guitar playing. Thus developing more of your on sound.

Its a great scale when learning guitar and should be used as your main scale shape. With the addition of more notes to the scale you will develop and learn guitar more quickly.
