The paradiddle. It is probably one of the most well known drumming rudiments today. Despite this there are a lot of drummers out there who don’t like practicing their paradiddles. Learning this rudiment can be a large benefit to any drummer as incorporating paradiddles into your playing can add another dimension to drum fills and grooves. So what is the main reason drummers don’t like practicing their paradiddles?

They don’t know how to apply it to the drum kit

When drummers start out a lot of the time they are taught the paradiddle on the practice pad and for a lot of them that is where it will stay, on the practice pad. They don’t make the effort to work on this rudiment on the drum kit. Well let me tell you now that having solid paradiddles on the drum kit can help your playing immensely and can be a whole lot of fun. The main reason beginner drummers are taught to practice the paradiddles on the drum kit is because it needs to be practiced to a certain level before you can do anything fun or cool with it on the drum kit. Most drummers will then think “I can just practice something else on the drum kit and it will be a lot more fun than sitting here on this practice pad” and they go about practicing other things and the paradiddle gets neglected.

Yes sitting there for an extended period of time playing paradiddles over and over will be boring for the vast majority of drummers, but a great way to practice your paradiddles is to do something else at the same time to distract yourself from the fact that you are sitting there going RLRR LRLL. Now I find that providing an example of this will be the easiest way to explain, and I am going to use the ABC game.

The ABC game

Okay so you have a practice pad in front of you. What you are going to do is try to recite the alphabet, saying one letter at a time on the first hit at the start of each paradiddle. For example it will be something like this R(“A”)LRR L(“B”)RLL. So each time you start a new paradiddle you will say a letter of the alphabet. Give this a go even tapping it out on your computer desk and see how far you can get through the alphabet. Once you can do that try saying every second letter of the alphabet when your right hand starts the paradiddle or try doing it with a friend and take turns saying each letter at the start of each paradiddle. Get creative and try to come up with new things to say as you play your paradiddles.

The reason why this game is so great is because you will get so caught up in trying to get to the end of the alphabet, you won’t even realise that you have been practicing your paradiddles. The game distracted you from thinking about how boring and repetitive the rudiment is.

This is just one example of how you can improve your paradiddles and can be applied to all of your rudiments, just get creative. Remember the more you practice your paradiddles on the practice pad the more fun they are going to be on the drum kit.
