Piano lessons for beginners may be difficult to comprehend, boring even, as many of the practice materials or piano instruction books that are geared towards beginners have music and instructional methods that really aren't intended for those who want to just simly play popular music. Now don't get me wrong, the theory and technic that are pretty much common place in beginner piano lesson books are more than necessary; but couldn't they at least be a lot more fun? Couldn't they teach you how to play the songs that you love to play, not some 16th century Baroque period composition. Those songs are indeed beautiful, but I just want to play something like “California Girls” by Katy Perry. Piano lessons for beginners don't really teach you that. But there are resources out ther that will.
Music, in it's most purest form, is complex at best. But the tunes that we all love and enjoy are actually simple chord progressions and melodies that are repeated over and over again, from song to song across multiple genres. A I-IV-V progession in the key of C is the basis of so many songs that we hear, but being a beginning piano player, you wouldn't know or understand that. The average piano instruction book that deals with piano lessons for beginners don't really spell this theory or notion out for you, they kind of leave it up to you to figure it out on your own.
And it also seems as if your average piano instructor doesn't have a clue either as to how to teach individuals how to play popular music, at least in my experience they don't know how to do it. Spending half a day calling piano instructors in my area yielded no results for any teacher that could teach me how to play pop piano, all of their instructional methods based on piano lessons for beginners were classically directed. Classical music is beautiful to listen to, but BLAH to play. Again, most of us simply want to play popular music!
There are a few select pieces out there that are both dedicated to piano lessons for beginners and playing popular piano, and once I found them I was more than intrigued and happy that I found those resources. Once I found them, all I had to do to become successful with playing pop piano was to set a schedule for my practice, and make sure that I kept consistent with my practice. Everything was spelled out for me, and I felt as if all of my previous time and money spent on piano lessons for beginners in the past was wasted, as my new resource allowed me to get rid of my piano teacher and those God awful instruction methods that were absolutely boring at best. I felt absolutely liberated, and my piano playing reflected that.
Don't let the typical piano lessons for beginners keep you from reaching your full piano playing potential. Find and utilize the right resources to assist you in reaching your goals. That tune in your head is only one keyboard away!
