Singing: Mind Tricks To Motivate Yourself To Practice

1. Just do It! – Nike’s all too familiar motto is good for your singing too. When you don't but practicing past that note you just can’t hit or that break you just can’t smooth no matter what you seem to do, just do it and get started. Here’s a little trivia for you: Nike was a goddess in Greek mythology. You can spot her in the story of the Trojan War treading along behind Aries, the god of war. Nike's role? She was the goddess of victory. No wonder Aries loved (and needed) her to tag along. The army she went over to was the army who was winning at that specific point in time. When she left, they lost. So what does Nike know about teaching you how to sing well? Just do it. Unlike Nike, her "act now, feel later" principle isn't just myth but a fact that works in the real world.

2. *Insert Your Fave Artist Here* Lost His/Her Voice - let go of your this-is-ridiculous mindset for a moment because this tip will do YOU good: imagine your favorite artist approaching you on the stage where he/she is about to perform, then talks to you saying, "*your name here,* out of all days to lose my voice it had to be today. There's no way I can sing with this throat right now. Can I borrow your vocal cords for today?" You agree. [Your fave artist's soul enters your body]. "It's showtime! Now let's rock this." As you sing think what your fave artist is thinking, feel what he/ she is feeling. Don't hold back and see the difference.

A professional singer's vocal cords are no different from mine or yours. The difference lies in how they use it: even if they had our vocal cords to work with, they would still get it to sound the way they want it to because they already know how . Think about it.

3. Listen to Before and Afters – there are many first-hand accounts of everyday people who have turned their voice around by doing the practice you are about to do, and there are a number of these on the Internet. You can find them on websites like singingsuccess.com. Record a clip of you singing now, then forget about it momentarily. As your practice session is about to start, listen to the before and afters again and visualize you in your "after" voice as you practice. Keep practicing the right exercises for your voice for concentrated sessions of 15 to 30 minutes a day for 30 days straight. On the 30th day, record yourself again singing the same song you sang 30 days ago.

If you been practicing the right exercises correctly for the said amount of time without fail, the difference would show up in your "after" recording. It might not be your perfect "after" voice yet, but everytime you feel discouraged go back and listen to your "partial" before and after. Realize for a fact that you really are improving in a very measurable way, and you're bound to sing better later if not very soon:)
