Start Learning Piano - It\'s Never Too Late!

Yes, you absolutely can start learning piano! Whether you choose to take private piano lessons from a teacher or begin teaching yourself piano with a learn-at-home course, it's never too late to experience the joy of playing a musical instrument. Not only is learning a new skill great for keeping your mind sharp (our brains actually grow neural pathways when we learn something new), but you'll discover how self-expression at the piano keyboard can bring joy to your day, alleviate stress, and give you a little chunk of time every day that's just for you.

When I talk to adults about playing piano, I hear the same things over and over. "I took piano lessons when I was a kid, but I can't remember how to play anything. I sure with I had stuck with it after the first couple of years." And, "I know it's too late now to really learn to play." But the good news is, it's really not too late to learn. Whether you're 14 or 40 or 84, you can start now. Imagine where you can be in 6 months, or a year? You'll be playing things you only dreamed of! I have taught students of all ages, from under 5 years old to over 80 years old -- the only person who can't learn is the person who never starts!

Piano lessons with a private teacher are a great way to learn piano, and one-on-one learning means you get a personal coach and answers to every question. But one thing to consider is finding a teacher that will teach you the kind of music you want to play. If you're interested in playing old standards, for instance, you really don't have to take 4 years of classical lessons before you can play the music you love! Find a teacher who will get you playing the music you love as soon as possible!

There are also some wonderful learn-at-home piano courses out there now, which are a more budget-friendly option for learning piano. Teaching yourself means that you need to be a very self-motivated person and really make a practice plan and stick to it! It's far more effective for you to practice 15 minutes every day than to try and cram in an hour on the weekends -- we learn by best by practicing things frequently (think about learning to tie your shoes as a kid, or learning to drive a car as a teenager).

Although many people believe that music is some sort of special gift that only talented classical musicians have, the truth is that we are all innately musical. Making music used to be a part of the fabric of society, and people learned to play from family and friends and everyone shared music together. I'd love it if we could build that strong sense of community music again: no pressure, no perfection, just enjoying playing and making music.

So whether you want to find a piano teacher or begin teaching yourself piano, I hope you won't put off your dreams of playing piano any longer. Start making music, and enjoy the process even as a beginner. You'll surprise yourself at how quickly you can learn and how much fun you can have!

Excellent article, Kim. I can't read music, but I do have a keyboard and love sitting down and playing. It's one of those joys in life that are so soothing and so precious. It all started when my Mom made me take some lessons when I was just a wee little kid. I sure am thankful for those lessons now!
