Learning to play guitar is exciting, but is even more exciting to see how much you have learned with time. In fact to improve your guitar skills is not difficult at all once you have figured out what is it that you really want to play, I mean, what type of music and songs you prefer to play.
Taking the first step is always kind of hard, if you have decided that you want to learn new things, the first thing you need to do is to get out of your comfort zone, I know it sound a little bit obvious, but the truth is that many people start learning something new, and it is not easy for them to overcome difficult lessons or new scales, so they continue playing the way they were playing, meaning that instead of taking one step forward, they have taken two steps backwards.
Now, to avoid going backwards you got to have the right mindset, it all starts with your attitude towards being a more professional musician; just by having the right amount of motivation you can go a long way in this journey of becoming a better guitar player.
So basically, if you are serious about improving your guitar skills you will be defined by what you do and how you do it, not just by thinking on how you want to do it.
To improve your guitar skills in four weeks, you need to plan ahead how you are going to do it, so let me give you a piece of advice that will get you to start playing guitar in a different and higher level, especially if you haven´t played your guitar in a while:
Week 1: Clean your guitar, replace the strings (if you haven´t already), sometimes, little stuff like this can make a huge difference, don´t leave your guitar with the same strings for months and months at a time, try to replace them every 2 months or so. After you have done that, it’s a good idea during this first week to start doing finger exercises, learn one scale and practice it every day for 5 days.
Week 2: Find one new song to learn, just one, dedicate your sole attention and your entire focus to this one song, do what you usually do to learn a new song, a kind of difficult, listen to it several times, download the tab, only this time try to learn it as slow as possible, practice it for at least one hour a day for 5 days using a metronome and try to learn it mistakes free.
Week 3: Continue playing the song you’re already learning, practice and practice some more, you should be gaining some speed by now and your fingers will be more agile, start putting some speed to the metronome until you are able to play the song on real speed.
Week 4: You have started playing guitar again with the right foot my friend; your next move is to continue practicing, on week four start following a guitar course or join a music academy, this way you’ll have consistency and you will have a ton of lessons ahead of you to practice.
To start playing guitar like a professional all you need is determination and motivation, take the first step, that’s the hardest thing to do, after that, you have half of the battle won already, have a great day.
