I like rock music a lot, for that, one of the things I really wanted to do ever since I was a kid was to learn electric guitar; one of my favorite bands when I was a kid was Guns n’ Roses, they still are, and I just loved the way Slash played those amazing solos; I really wanted to learn how to play.
A few years later, when I began to learn guitar I realized that learning to play guitar with an electric guitar is not the best idea; my first guitar was an acoustic guitar and a friend of mine had an electric guitar, I tried to play a few chords on the electric guitar and I noticed that my fingers weren’t prepared to the metal strings, so that was the moment I knew that I need to learn guitar on an acoustic guitar.
Acoustic guitars, or I should probably say classical guitars, are better to start learning guitar, they are easier to handle and the songs that you can play when you are a beginner are easier to play on a classical guitar due to many reasons.
It is better to learn on an acoustic guitar, and let me go ahead and give you a couple of reasons why I believe that starting from scratch with an electric guitar is not the appropriate way to go.
1. Metal strings might hurt your fingers. When you are taking your first steps as a musician, or in this case as a guitar player, your fingers are not used to the strings, I can tell you that if you start with an electric guitar, the metal strings will hurt your fingers a lot more than if you start with a classical guitar with nylon strings, and this is one of the reasons why I think that an acoustic guitar is easier to handle.
2. Electric guitars are heavy. Classical guitars are not as heavy as electric guitars, which is another reason why electric guitars are a little bit more difficult to handle; if you are able to dominate the weight of the guitar with your hands from the very first day, it will be easy for you to start playing easy songs later on.
3. The fret board is smaller. When you are learning to play guitar, one of the first lessons is how to play guitar chords; it is more comfortable for you to start learning to play the chords on a guitar that has a wider fret board, so it gives you more room to place your fingers, and when you are learning the chords, you need it.
My advice to you is to go out there, buy an acoustic guitar and start learning the chords, after you know a song or two, you may start thinking about getting your electric guitar; I personally believe that you can have more fun playing an electric guitar, well, I think like that because my favorite type of music is rock music, never the less it is important to learn to play guitar on an acoustic guitar and then move on to the electric guitar. Starting to play guitar is a great experience my friend, good luck.
