What Are Guitar Inlays?

There are many different materials and designs, which, are used for guitar inlays and that, is what makes them different from one another. The inset pieces are called inlays, which are used with fingerboards. There are two different reasons to use inlays: as guides in finding the right frets, and as decorations. High-end, custom guitars most of the time have very elaborate and custom inlays, which usually add a lot of value and worth to them. The more intricate inlays are added for advanced skill level and for additional visual appeal.

Simple Inlays

The simplest form of guitar inlay is to have none at all. Some fingerboards are completely blank, because the guitar owner prefers it to be that way. Sometimes, dots can still be viewed on the surface of the neck, when seen from the standing position, so that the player can find the right frets. Usually, most basic guitars have several plastic dots on the guitar inlay position. Frets can be made from many materials; sometimes Abalone or even Mother of Pearl. Generally the more intricate materials are reserved for the more elaborate guitar inlay.

More Complex Inlays

The Gibson guitar has been known to have a more elaborate inlay than the Fender model. A block or trapezoid- like shape is the most frequent shape, although this uses more material than the tiny dots. This often makes the more out of the ordinary inlay material more exhilarating. Although, other models , have inlays on their guitars that reach from the top of the neck to the bottom, sometimes stretching onto the frets, which produces tree branch looking shapes, and others. Certain designs can only be purchased on the pricier guitars, which is why their cost is so high and they are harder to manufacture.

Your Favorite Inlay

Many people simply just keep using the same guitar that they have had for years because they have little choice. The guitar player keeps the guitar because of its sound and playability, no matter the design on the neck, and feels the need to accept its existing design. However, there are other choices in the matter and builders who would be happy to customize your pre-existing guitar or to build you a new one with the inlay of your choice. There are some companies that sell ready-made guitar necks that can be as a replacement to your own guitar. The inlays for guitars are made almost totally for show, but if you would like to make a statement and your guitar look more interesting without buying an entirely new one, then this is an excellent option.
