Why The World Loves A Singer
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

ONE lazy day you mindlessly flip through channels on your TV, you catch a singer belting out an all-too-familiar love song with superhuman high notes, singing her heart out like there was no tomorrow. You pause for a moment to look and listen. Your flipping has stopped. Next thing you know you’re already watching the show. Have you ever caught yourself getting caught up in singing shows like that?

Since American Idol started airing on Fox on June 11, 2002, it has become one of the most popular shows in America’s television history. As of January this year, it has become the most-watched TV series in the Nielsen ratings and is the only program to have been number one for six consecutive seasons. The New York Times read that rival TV executives described it "the most impactful show in the history of television," when on a very basic level it’s really just a singing contest. For a singing contest to rule over the ratings, is America really just that shallow?

Why does America (and the rest of the world for that matter) stop and stare at someone singing for a while? Maybe you’re a singer yourself, a simple music lover, or don’t care much for music at all. But admit it, one time or another you’ve definitely sat through a performance just like that and sang along to one yourself! Just a teensy curious wonder on something with such a huge impact, do you ever wonder with me why?

Singing by definition is producing tones with the voice, talking with pitch, or as Pavarotti describes it, ‘crying’ on pitch. But what makes singing such a crowd sweeper is the realization that singing is a form of expression, a good distraction, the ultimate form of entertainment. A song is like poetry, it molds basic human sentiments into an art form of beauty, taking those sentiments a notch higher by singing rather than just talking about it. A good singer is just like a good storyteller in that he draws the audience into the song, making them see, feel, and hear what the song wants to convey. When you as a singer get this song of a message across to your audience, heartstrings are struck, feet tap, hands clap and wave, mouths sing along, and eyes cry. You call out to them, and the hear you. For a moment their inner ramblings and day-to-day motions are silenced as they listen to yours. They either love you, hate you, take you seriously, or laugh at you… for all you can care. But you had them, and they had you!

When you as a singer can hold the world in your hands like that and make them (your audience) feel to a deeper level the sentiments that they are already holding, they’ll not only be impressed. They’ll love you! Communication is, after all, the lifeblood of –well, people who are live in contact with one another. Singing is beautiful communication and when you become such a great ‘communicator’ congratulations, then follows the high ratings and droves of fans starting clubs named afer you! And Maybe your very own album, MTV, or Grammy award if you really get lucky.
