Unlike the older generation, we live in a world where musical instruments are popular, particularly the guitar instruments. Almost everywhere you go, there are bound to be at least a guitar player around. But the problem with them is that most of them sounds the same, at least tone wise. You see, electric guitar is made in such a way that it can change your sound through the guitar effects. These can be in a form of Analog Pedals or the Multi Effects.
A bit about both Analog Pedals and Multi Effects; Analog pedals are pedals that comes in a form of stomp boxes. It is usually rectangular / squarish in shape and it is usually connected with other analog pedals so as to change the sound of the guitar. Imagine chaining up 10 over analog pedals into one. You will find that it is really difficult to control the sound that you want. The worse case scenario is that guitarist may have to change the configurations of some or all the pedals after every each song as different song may require different sound.
Multi Effects however eliminates the need to connect different stompboxes together as everything is built into it. It is also really much easier to use as everything can be pre programmed into it. However, the big downside to Multi Effects are the sound that it produce. Analog, as the name says it, have a natural sounding elements. It sounds very organic and real. This is in contrast to multi effects, which is based mostly on digital sounding. It does not sound as nice as Analog Pedals and this is a big blow to multi effects even though it is very compact.
For me, I personally believe you just have to keep trying to combine both types of effects. I do combine multi effects together with analog pedal sometimes. But one of the pedals that I cannot live without is the Boss PS-6. This Boss PS-6 Harmonist analog pedal is actually a harmonizing guitar pedal, plus more. You can harmonize your guitar playing for up to 3 guitars, all in one in this tiny little monster. The guitar sound can also be pitch-shifted one octave up and a fifth below on your choice of note. This is particularly great for arpeggio-style playing, for example.
One of the other very cool feature that the Boss Harmonist PS-6 has is the ability to bend the sound to a very high octave. It is called the 'Super Bend'. I use this a lot everytime I use this pedal. If you use it correctly, you will attract the listeners' attention and people will think you are a genius or something. But remember the rule of the thumb - Everything you do, do it in moderation. That's what differentiates a professional guitarist to those average ones.
Almost everything that Boss made, especially this PS-6 harmonist, is very durable. A friend that I know used his boss pedals for 10+ years before it died on him. During those years, he gigged with it so many times and brought with him everytime he goes for jam sessions. It is really built like a tank.
If you want to differentiate yourself with someone else in terms of your overall playing, this Boss PS6 Harmonist is one of the ways that you can look into. You don't need to know how to play damn good to be able to be a good guitarist. If you use in moderation with regards to the tips that I talked about, you will realize your potential to be a good guitarist. Good luck.
I think I get the direction you are going in, Slick, however, you may need to reword the first line of the article. You make it sound like we have musical instruments and guitars floating through the air around us today and "the older generation" didn't have musical instruments. LOL Musical instruments have been around literally since biblical times and the guitar has been around in great abundance for many years, even back in my great-grandparents day. You may need to offer more of an explanation on this device as it is not clear if you are not a musician or associated with music, as to what you are describing. Keep in mind that all of us may not be knowledgeable in guitars, or have even the slightest idea what a stompbox is, so you may want to use more 'lay terms' so everyone can appreciate this device.
